It's been a little while, hasn't it? I've been consumed by two things. First, as I might have mentioned, my home computer died. It was a name brand machine, and I could not figure out how to replace the defective parts, so I decided to build my own system so I can fix things on the fly. It's been a fair amount of work, and it's had its ups and downs. I thought I was just about finished this week, and then problems cropped up with a boot disc (an early chance to fix things on the fly!). Still, it's almost back to normal, just a few more tweaks: I'm looking forward to changing back from computer building to computer user. Throw in a 4-day run of influenza, and DttC has slipped.
I suppose it's a good time for a pause, at the transition between the Brent years and the Bruce & Vince years. Brent died of his bad habits after the summer tour of 1990, five years before Jerry would die of his bad habits after the sumemer tour of 1995. Vince was not a good choice for a replacement. Bruce, on the other hand, was a good choice, but the birth of his twin sons and his discouragement with Jerry's drug problems and "what he saw as a disturbing complacency and stasis within the band" caused him to sign off in early 1992. So in our path through the band's history, we stand at the pivot between what I think are the best two years of music-making the band did since 1977 and the Hornsby-driven "last gasp" that produces so many good shows in late 1990 and 1991.
Eric's first choices in this era are from the Sept, 1990 run of shows from the Madison Square Garden. These shows are pretty commercially available, so what I've decided to do is to seed all the music from those shows that is not on Dick's Picks 9 or Road Trips Vol 1 No 2; if you download this torrent and go out and buy those discs, you'll have the whole run (which, you could argue, is the best post-1977 run period).
9/14/90 is still pre-Bruce, a good example of the energy the rest of the band was putting into the music during early September to compensate for Bruce's loss, and one of the shows Eric particularly likes. There is more energy here than innovative jamming in the first set: the Sugaree is an early example of Vince playing large enough that Jerry had no room to let loose. Things get more exciting in the second set: Jerry plays like a fire-sprite dancing on an evening field during the jams throughout Scartlet > Fire, all flame and darting invention. Jerry sings particularly well here, the band is well in tune and offering up innovative complex yet meaningful jamming; Eric says the music here gets to that great place where the playing and the communicated emotion are at a shared peak. Things turn blue during Truckin', and then silver-smooth, liquid and jewel-like through Terrapin. The jamming into Drums is another highpoint, but from there things get more normal. Eric gets more exercised by this Other One than I do; I like the Wharf Rat more than he does; the upshot is, it's a good lot of interesting jamming well worth having.
9/15/90 is Bruce's first night. The compendium reviewer (Peter Lavezzoli) offers up a great analogy of this show and the whole run: he likes the run to a carnaval in celebration of Bruce's arrival, and he says the remaining five nights flow from the carousel ride that is 9/15 through to the roller coaster ride that is 9/20. Here the first set is particularly sweet: lots of good singing and happy interesting playing from the get-go, and a nice transition into a more substantial and introspective mood for the well-played closing Bird Song > Box Of Rain. The Playin' > Crazy Fingers > Uncle John jam in the second set is quite remarkable: Phil and Jerry absolutely rock during Playin', Jerry is perfectly on for this Noteworthy Crazy Fingers (and Bruce takes a nice spin in there too), and then Jerry and Vince (ha you doubters :) ) drive a playful Uncle John. Post Space starts with a lot of really great rock energy, the only post-Brent Gimme Some Lovin' and a rangy Watchtower, but from there it settles into a low level for the evening.
9/16/90 is Dick's Picks 9, and you'll want that version as there's no other soundboard in registered circulation. Highpoints include the brilliant interaction between Bruce and Jerry in Queen Jane Approximately and Tennessee Jed, the exquisite invention in Samson and Aiko, the hugely and beautifully jammed all-time version of He's Gone, the precious little Bruce & Phil jam after Jerry and Bobby leave pre-drums, a brilliant Drums, a mulligan Space (called Lunatic Preserve) where the band makes up for not nailing Space right the first time, and a fine Morning Dew.
9/18/90 is partly released on the Road Trips v1 no2 bonus disc. It has a better first set than second. The first set sparkles with energy during what are usually more humdrum songs, as both keyboardists play well and Jerry is inspired to match them: the Half-Step, the Minglewood, the Loser, and the To Lay Me Down are all much better than usual. The second set, on the other hand, seems to be out of sync. Early on Phil and Jerry want to play a great Eyes but Vince gets in their way. Things recover by Foolish Heart (shh, Vince, listen), and then there's a great Jerry/Bruce jam out of Foolish Heart. Out of Space it sounds like there's going to be a great Other One, and the build-up is magnificent, but somehow it dies before it's born. Then Sugar Mag has Bruce at the lead so much that Jerry checks out: nice if you like the piano, but it doesn't seem to quite click either. So it's kind of a problematic show.
09/19/90 is partially released on the Road Trips v1 no2. The first set energy is quite remarkable. Nearly every song is played to a level where it'd be a set-highlight for most of the previous ten years. It's to the point where you struggle to find a song in the set that isn't a highlight -- did Bobby miss a vocal on that one? Was Jerry short of breath on the other? But the Jack Straw, the cowbody songs, and the Memphis Blues are all fabulous. The Slipknot! > Franklin's here goes on beyond that to near-perfect, a large multi-colored reptile of a Slipknot! slithering into a great green summer-evening wooded pool of a Franklin's. The opening half of the second set is one long fascinating jam that occasionally visits some lyrics: Playin' is tugged into a Brokedown sort of Ship of Fools, then it finds itself before being tugged into an Uncle John's that immedeately melts back into the Playin' vibe before flowing into Let It Grow that has kind of a normal or above average Phil-stompin' sort of life and then blooms, at its end, into a remarkable ten-minute spacey imaginative Jerry & Bruce jam that is just astonishing for its unexpectedness and its beauty. After Jerry leaves, Bruce spends some time as a percussionist at the beginning of drums, then leaves as well. After a very good Drums and Space, we get an extraordinary Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad, a sweet deep Stella, and then a bouncy good night Around and Around. A great show start to finish, no doubt.
09/20/90 is a fitting cap to all this wonderful music, perhaps the best show of the bunch? The first set is very unusual, a lot of songs in peculiar places, none really well jammed out, but all informed with interesting soloing. The fire in Stranger cannot be missed, nor can the emotion and invention in Brown-Eyed Women. U.S. Blues also rocks the house, a fine set-ender. The jamming surely arrives in the second set: the opening Truckin' has some great dense jamming at its tail end; the China Cat has imagination and energy to waste, twisting and building and then exploding into an all-time Rider where first Bruce and then Jerry & Phil contribute unbearably good licks. After all that tense energy, Man Smart (Woman Smarter) keeps the vibe but provides some relaxation, and flows on into drums. The meet of the show, surprisingly, comes after Space, where a Jam leads into an extremely well-executed Dark Star, rich on multi-layered unexpectedosity and hacky-sack thought-sharing. There's an unexpected and not entirely welcome visit to Playin', then Vince leads the band back into another Jam and more Dark Star that Phil wouldn't let be perfunctory. Hornsby is a monster in here, Vince is fitting in, then Jerry finds the trail and lights some flairs to show the direction. Bruce establishes a solid place for the rest of the band to find footing, and they dance around it in the mud and shards. Jerry shoots off more flares. Phil is booming along underground. Finally the light returns, the band finds the path and marches off more or less in step, and they stumble into a clearing filled with Throwing Stones. This is a Throwing Stones worthy of following Dark Star, sung seriously, jammed brilliantly all around, flowing into a Touch of Grey that provides a puzzle for the band to tease through, and then on into a closing Lovelight, short but sweet, as a goodnight.
Is there a better run post-1977? I'm not sure.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

YES! Thank you very much indeed for your efforts, especially in spite of all your obstacles. Hate that gdm keeps releasing partial shows so our uploads end up as mish-mashes. This is one damn fine mash though :)
As far as a better post-1977 run?
Hmmm ... you drive a hard bargain.
But I have to say I more enjoy the October 17-22 Winterland run of 1978 (and throw the closing of Winterland from 12-31 in there at the end to cap it off nicely). But for me, post '78 you have my vote for this MSG extravaganza! :)
Thanks again! |

yeah, it's a funny thing about official releases. you can argue "why didn't they ever release *that* show???", but then when they do, we shouldn't share it here anymore (per eTree policies at least).

Hey Steve,
Good luck with your new computer. I had a similar aggravating experience here last weekend when an AV program corrupted one of the files on my operating syste, That only lasted one night, but it was the night before Easter.
I can only imagine the difficulties you have encountered in dealing with these computer issues. I guess in the long run, it makes us all better people, builds character (I guess that's what my old man would've said). |

| Thanks, SteveSw! I'm pretty much a novice and a newbie to the community and your wonderful project, but I must say, an absolutely amazing effort made by you, upping all this music and adding all the great comments (which I always read). The generosity, passion and commitment you demonstrate is an essential part of what keeps this community strong, creative and thriving. All blessings to you, friend. |

is a run considered three gigs or more at the same venue?
i agree with the October 78 Winterland run, but this is probably right up there with that, and better than some pre-77 runs (maybe).
i LOVE the fall of 1979 and another "run" i think had great shows was 12/3-5/1979, i know this is not a favorite of many, but i LOVE 12/3 and 12/5, and if there were another show in this 3 show run, i think it would be up there.
some honorable mentions:
the three July Red Rocks in 1982 (and the august 1-10 are is another "week of precision" as i like to call it).
also, if a SBD of the three Berkeley 81 shows were available, i would put that as an honorable mention. |

i think you can look at a run in a couple of ways. one is, it's shows in the same place. the other is, it's shows in a row.
In the first case, you are asking, are there a bunch of shows in a row from one spot that got as good as these six shows? And there I think you have to give credit for the six-showness, and say, even if two or three shows hit this quality bar, the fact that there are six here is pretty astonishing.
In the second case, you are asking, are there six shows played night-after-night that were as good as these six? I imagine that's what Eric was thinking, though of course I don't know: I do believe you have to go back to 1977 to find six shows night-after-night that stand up to these six, regardless of where they were played.
This is just special stuff, the band particularly energetic after the loss of their friend, the entry of a musician of the caliber of the best of the band, and the resulting conversations and joyful initial explorations. It has the feel of the first weeks of a new deep love. That's hard to beat.

Hey, just a note (AND A BIG THANKS TO HUNTER, AGAIN, AS IT SHOULD BE)...
I just put on my "rabbit ears" (hey, born in the Year of the Hare, the "luckiest of all signs", let's hope so...), and this is what *I* determined, according to *my taste* and discernment (which I do think is pretty good)...
Of the 3 xources I have complete for GD MSG 900918, this is the order of preference, mostly based on overall clarity, Phil's awesome bass, which is probably *the* highlight of these shows, AFAIAC, the quality of the vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums (in roughly that order), the best is:
1. gd90-09-18.sbd.richey.11811.sbeok.shnf
Not completely astounding like an official release, or even a Charlie Miller special, but pretty darn good
2. gd90-09-18.bk4011.tdarian-french.88968.sbeok.flac16
Good, definitely, but not as clear and clean as the Richey source, and not as balanced, instrument wise, but not bad...
3. gd90-09-18.dmtx.hansokolow.96156.sbeok.flac16
A big surprise to me, as I thought this would be the best, hands down. This source seems a little "flatter", not as dynamic, the instruments, vocals not as "rich", and here is, I think, why: sounds like (and I'm a musician who uses and has been listening to effects, guitarists, and music for nearly 30 years straight, for the most part... ; ) there is a possibe issue with "phase cancellation", where two signals arriving at a source (or in this case combined, but not *exactly* in-sync, which is to be expected of a Matrix, but for whatever reason, this time, the music sounds like it has lost some of its richness, probably due to some areas of the tonal spectrum being cancelled out or otherwise adversely affected...), sounds less vivid and dynamic to me anyway.
So, anyway, I made a CD set with the Miller.Fix-086952 tracks (all the "non-official" tracks, and the Richey source to fill in the tracks that are not included in the Miller source. Tel ya what, without thinking about it, I can't te an big difference between the Miller and the RIchey tracks (as I'm listening via computer with in-ear headphones, medium or so quality, not really good ones and not really cheap ones, mid-level Sony brand).
So, you want a kickin' 900918?
