Here is last night's Indigo Girls show from Ann Arbor. I had this show on my radar. It has been a few years since I have seen Emily and Amy, and was looking forward to it. I did a bit of research to see what the current taping policy was. I went back and saw how a couple of times, tapers were turned away at the door and I was not about to go through the trouble of traveling up to the show and get shut out. I saw an old friend Scott in NYC, recently taped them. So, I contacted Russell Carter Management back home in Atlanta, the day before the show, and spoke with Molly. Russell was busy at the time so I explained to her what my intentions were. She said she would talk to Russell and get back to me. I asked for Russell's email addy so I could send him a note and have it on record. She called me back in less than 30 minutes and said "yes, you have permission to record". I told Molly I sent Russell an email. I asked if the band had access to good seats that I may purchase so I would be in the "sweet spot". She said no, not for this show. Molly also responded to my email.
So, I roll up to Ann Arbor, with my emails from Molly and the bands taping policy, and hit the Michigan Theatre, another venue where I have pulled great sound. No time to stop and eat as it was about 7:00 and doors were opened at 6:30. Molly called and left me a message. There was an envelope waiting for me, hmm. I go to will call and sure enough, Molly had saved me a pair to purchase in ROW L, DFC! I only needed 1, so I go to the door. The security said no cameras. I told her I was recording audio and she hollered to the other securit guard, the audio recorder is here. Wow, the staff was not only informed, but knew I was the only one allowed in with my gear! I hit the seat and James, the head of security came over and greeted me. He said "let me know if there is anything I can do for you". Holy !!!!. This kind of treatment never happens, was I dreaming. I set up shop and recorded the opener, Jenifer Occonnor and the Indigo Girls.
The crowd was ready for the show. After about 4-5 songs, they were like a snake ready to strike, and for the rest of the show, they were rambuncious. They were very vocal and on their feet quite a bit. The Indigo Girls were joined for most of the songs by Julie Wolf on Keyboards and Accordian. Lots of the new cd was played as it was just released. Some cool tunes on it. They also dug into their catalogue of over 20 years of tunes. A super enjoyable evening with the royal treatment. I must admit, I felt spoiled by Russell Carter Management, especially by Molly, and the entire staff at the Michigan Theatre! THANK YOU!
At the end of the show, I thanked James and headed to the car. It was 10:45, so I called Sushi Town and ordered 2 Spicy Tuna Rolls, a Miso Soup, and a Tossed Salad with Ginger Dressing. Five minutes later, I picked it up and it was gone within the first few miles driven on I-94 East!
Enjoy Show # 85 of 2009!

It's always so nice when your ahead of the game, they're ahead of the game and everybody's informed. Way to go Indigo Girls management and way to go Zman! Thanks for a nice morning read, looking forward to hearing the show.

| Thanks so much for this. I love the Indigo Girls and look forward to hearing the material from their new cd. Nice to know there are some management companies that open their arms and embrace the tapers and the fans. Very cool story. |

| god i hope nothing ever happens to tuna rolls--it's the zman y'all! good god son, i thought you said you were slowing down--show # 85 on the 113th day of the year (meaning you've taped every day 3 out of the 4 months in 09--all that deserves is a big f--king A, dood!)...you're definitely on tour. thanks for this. a friend in china has been asking for some new IGs, while not my bag necessarily, i know she'll appreciate it being so far from home in Smokeyland Shang-hai. no dis'spects to anybody, but a good IG tape is hard to find...and as you've said, the crowd was like snake ready to bite, but maybe with the awesome treatment you got at el teatro there'll be less screaming ladies than normal...thanks for yet another great seed, Z! take a break... |

I remember way back "in the day" when they first made a splash. Good tunes. I have a question that could pertain to the taping of any show. Do you (as a taper) ever have the time to inform any audience members where they can get a copy of the recording? I know with the more well known taper friendly bands, this is a non-issue. But, I am sure at some shows, folks just aren't aware that taping is allowed (or can be allowed with some leg work and courtey calls) and that these days, the show is easily accessable to just about anyone who wants it (granted it is going to be digitized and upped in a place like this).
So, do you inform your possibly clueless audience? |

hehe, i just remembered: not long ago here, they had to put up a "Hide the Indigo Girls" button on the home page due to the flood of IG tapes...hilarious.
final question: Z--did you drive up from ATL to get this????? |

| No, I am working in the NW Ohio/Michigan area. As far as informing the crowd at a show, yes I do. I always trade email addy's when someone asks. I explain where I will upload a show. I generally take someone's email addy, and send them the link to the upload within a day or 2. I have even gone as far as recommending and helping individuals get a torrent client, and a flac program. And in many cases, walked them through the process, They are very appreciative for the most part. Once they learn the process, their music world is enhanced and the floodgates are opened! If someone is computer challenged, I will even accept B & P's from them. So, the answer to your question is YES, I do point folks in the right direction. |

After that great taping story, how can anyone NOT jump on this and check it out.
Kudos to you for the pre-planning. And a great big 'Way To Go' for the really great vibes from the management, Molly, and the house staff. Nicely done by all involved. |

That is cool. I figured that there would have to be at some curious folks who don't know that taping is allowed and / or where to get the show later. If it helps the artists get more people to the shows and spend a bit doing so, they will continue to make the music we love!
I have noticed quite a few shows from Ann Arbor (Go Blue!). College towns usually have good tours come through.
I never bothered the tapers at GD or Phish shows since I knew tapes would make it my way eventually. Thanks for taping and sharing.
Reading the stories is half the fun!
To you, zman, and all of you who tape and share I say: Thanks! I know my world is a better place because of people like you! |

Great story....and glad I inspired you to get out and tape 'em! Never too much quality Indigo Girls out there. Really, never enough quality recordings of ANY band out there. ;-)
Glad their management was so accommodating -- I've never tried to contact them before as I haven't anticipated trouble getting into their shows with gear before.

| Thanks so much for this! I've been a fan since the 80's, but have never been to one of their shows. I think I'm going to have to try extra hard to get to their Seattle shows this summer. Wonderful to hear that the management "gets" it! |

| Yeah the "Hide Indigo Girls" filter was hilarious. The front page would be like 90% IG shows. Who's got my data dvd b&p? |

Can I offer a couple of corrections to the track listings? I think:
d02t03 - World Falls
d02t10 - Virginia Woolf
d02t12 - Galileo
Thanks again! This was exactly what I needed on a Friday afternoon that just won't end. |

ZMAN,
Smart to check ahead. Although the band is taper friendly, I've been forced to go stealth for them too many times. I hope the girls sound as good on your rig as Gov't Mule does!
Thanks for doing it right! |
