Dead To The Core Project
Noteworthy Terrapin Stations (A Collection)
This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Terrapin Station played
by the Grateful Dead. It is very closely based on a list put together
by Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An
Almanac of the Grateful Dead_. The only time I deviated from his list
was when he selected a version that has since been commercially
released and there was no audience recording of that version to
include. In those cases, I substituted a similar Terrapin from a
nearby date.
The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. If the transitions between Terrapin and its
neighbors are organic, I have included its neighbors in the track; if
the transitions were more cursory, I omitted them. I joined tracks in
jams with "shntool join", and then I retracked and added simple fades
using Wavelab. I compressed the files using "flac --best". I used
shntool version 3.0.2, flac version 1.1.3, and Wavelab version 6.

This night began like most other nights begin. With the sun setting like some cruel joke without a punchline. It happens every twenty four hours or so. The streetlights hung an orange anemic glow on the rain slick streets I had recently become so accustomed to since that fracas over on Cale Street. My Season in Hell. Payback. The hard Get Back.
Ruining the looks of a hundred dollar pair of Wingtips with the warmth of the whiskey in my belly and the cold rain sloshing around in my shoes for company, I made my way over to Terrapin Station on a tip from a dame who was trouble right from the start. Somehow, most dames usually are. They can't help themselves, I guess. It's in their nature. Some of 'em are only good at one thing and that's kicking poor slobs like me around. I was hot on the trail of a mug known only as "SteveSw". I used to be a cop. A good cop too and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There's been many a punk who took notes from my friends Smith and Wesson barking in their faces, but they ain't around to sing a song about it, so you'll just hafta take my word for it. I'm UpRight. Bolt Upright. It's stenciled right there on my door at my new address on Chump Street.
I turned down an alley to avoid a lot of human wreckage that usually congregate around The Harrington Street Mission. They're all pretty good joes, but they remind me of what could be waiting for me in my future and right now, I'm only concerned about the present. The present by which I mean the ten thousand 'Gs" the broad promised me for finding this mook SteveSw. Nah, I don't feel bad takin' money from a skirt. She'd do the same for me and quicker if she had the chance. Besides, I'd feel worse if my bookie catches up to me and I ain't got the dough. He'd and his pals would play sweet chin music and I'd have a front row ticket, see?
The alley was quiet. Too quiet for just one more Saturday Night. You could cut the air with a steak knife. Steak. Heh. I hadn't had a good steak in weeks. Just cold beans out of a can and a good belt of Who Hit John And Ran to wash 'em down.
Just to be on the safe side, I pulled my travelin' companion out of my pocket to keep me company. He rides in a holster on my hip next to my whip. He don't say much, which suits me fine. Casual conversation bores me. But then, if you hear him complain, you probably wouldn't hear anything ever again. He a persuasive arguer. He's the period at the end of your last breath.
The clattering of a bottle being dropped but not breaking was the sound that brought me out of my Daydream. I wheeled and softened up the bedarkened alley with my Smith and Wesson puking some hot lead into the heavy stillness, the acrid smell of my pals gunpowder flatulence hitting my nose. It's always good to poke some holes in whatever box you feel like you're in. Letting some air in, as they say. Once bitten twice shy I always say. Well, not always. But lately.
"There's no need for such a racket, Mr. Upright!" a voice called from a short distance. "Very Distracting."
"Who do I have the pleasure of speaking with?"
"You've been had, Mr. Upright."
"Tell me something I don't already know."
" Never trust a woman, Mr. Upright. Especially those of which wear their dresses too tightly."
Yeah, the dame who promised me the ten large. Sometimes looks can kill and I'm a sucker for a dame with a sob story. Especially when they dry their eyes with G-Notes. Shoulda been my 1st clue.
SteveSw came out of the shadows, smiling that smug smile of the mug who knows something you don't and at the end of the game you'll wish you didn't.
"Oh, Come Come, Mr. Upright. No need to be so standoffish! I have something I think you'll...ehm...Enjoy!"
"SteveSw, I presume. Glad to finally make your acquaintance. I'm not big on long hellos. I'm kinda shy that way. Tell you what: Let's skip the formalities. Lets just go along quietly, I'll get my 10 big and you and the dame can have your way with each other.whatever that way is. I really ain't innerested in your proclivities."
"Don't be foolish, Mr Upright. I have something here that I think you will find RAWTHER interesting. Much more interesting and edifying than the sordid topic of coin!."
" I dunno, pal! The filthy lucre's got a pretty good argument where I come from. What's your offer?"
"Bring this back to the girl and all of your questions will be answered."
SteveSw hands me off this piece of crumpled paper. It, like his hands, were clammy and damp. On it was written a code of some sort. Espionage? Treason? International Intrigue? How far down the rabbit hole did this go? I wondered what I'd gotten my self into. Before the light exploded in my head and pain filled my skull like cement in an apple tub, I read one word on that sad wet piece of paper. "Noteworthy"............................................(To Be Continued)
