| this is a really amazing audience recording. it is on par with 8/5-6/71 and the carousel '68 recording. the mics used are ok but we are not talking neuman 87's. the taper must have been close to the stage to get these results. i have not heard any recordings of any bands using the current line array spkr technology that sound this good. one can only assume that the dead's wall of sound contributed to the quality. the SPL was not as intense as current concert volumes and the crowd was subdued. too bad all recordings do not sound this good. this blows away a sbd recording. plus there is a 45 min PITB. |

This is one of a very small handful of shows (11-08-70 comes immediately to mind, the screams during Dark Star) that has it's own "mood". Hard to describe any better. Of course if you're an idiot who only likes soundboards, you're missing the whole point of live music. It's about capturing that one moment. Pop this on, turn out the lights and close your eyes. It WILL take you there. So maybe transcendent is the word I'm after. Nah, too many syllabubbles. Keep it simple, stupid. Play it and time travel to 1974. Still my favorite Playin' of all time and not just for the 46 minute length, I think they actually had something to say for most of this one.
