The James Young & Clay Brennecke FOB Vault - a GEMS Production
May 2008 ... we are in progress with The James Young and Clay Brennecke FOB Vault Transfer Project. We have all the Master DATs and are hard at work transferring, editing and soon to be releasing the shows Clay & James recorded from 1991 through 1994. James and Clay began recording with B&K 4011 microphones and a Sony Pro DAT in the Spring of 1991. Summer 1991 mainly saw recordings from the Front Row Dead Center of the Official Taper Section (OTS). June 28, 1991 was their first FOB Recording. And starting with Fall 1991, all of their recordings were All FOB All The Time! Early they recorded with the B&K 4011 Cardiod Mics in the ORTF pattern into a Modified Sony Pro DAT Deck. In 1993, James traded in the B&K's for the AMS ST-250 Soundfield Mic and recorded in the Blumlein pattern into the modified Sony Pro DAT Deck. We are starting at the beginning and working our way to the end of this vault. Spring 1991 through 1994. We have added artwork for CD's and included an m3u playlist for import into your choice of PC/MAC media player ... and if your player supports FLAC, all you have to do is place the folder where you plan to store the files and import the playlist - tracks, tagged and with art are ready for you. We hope you enjoy their body of recording work. ------- Todd & Jamie - Project GEMS.

If you have questions or comments, Clay would love to hear from you - clayb@fobdfc.com - and of course Jamie (**__**) and I (bluedakota) welcome any input you may have - shnflac@gmail.com - todd@bluedakota.com

Jerry succumbed to exhaustion after his summer tour in 1992. But then things went well -- he pulled it together, started eating better, got a trainer, lost some weight, and generally looked and seemed to feel better. The 92-10-31 show in Oakland was his first performance after the break, and was one of the largest West Coast JGB crowds ever. This is a great show, good playing, and the crowd was obviously Right There. The first set is more bounce than jam, and features good versions of Stop That Train, The Maker, and Lay Down Sally. The second set features more noodlie goodness -- from Shining Star through Breadbox, from Wonderful World through Tangled Up in Blue, it's just a great night to listen to the man. The Werewolves encore was particularly appropriate for Halloween.

Each of these sources has something to recommend it, IMHO anyway. So I'm sharing a SBD, an AUD of the whole show, and a GEMS AUD of the second set.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

thanks again steve. This show is a cooker. ive lent it out to friends over the years to use for wedding receptions, weddings etc for the shining star. i guess when romance is in the air this version of shining star makes for some cupid affect. Thanks again brother.

I'll second that emotion in regards to the awesomeness of Shining Star. It's forever imprinted into my brain due to a cross country drive through the Dakota prairies in the summer of '93 when I saw lightning strike the side of the interstate I was driving on during a rather ferocious thunderstorm while listening to this show. So, my opinion may be biased, but I still think this is a great Shining Star!

I can't believe you have cranked out 107 of these--just amazing! I look forward to the next one.

Great one Steve.

It is unfortunate that all the Jerry we saw out on the East Coast was impersonal arena rock. French's was a long memory by 1991. And I never really caught "it" in the 50 or so hockey rinks I visited. Too bad.....
SteveSw 2009-05-27 11:18:46
When I watched Phil play the five shows at the Warfield last May, my mind kept suggesting how much happier Jerry might have been if he had been able to play less frequently and at venues like that. But by the time of this recording, the Grateful Dead had a huge payroll and infrastructure to maintain, which made it necessary to tour big venues constantly. I suppose that's part of the reason we see Jerry at the Oakland Coliseum here, he had the need to bring in some cash to compensate for the loss of August, September and most of October.
