Thanks (as always) for another great SHNFamily project. I have a question, and I don't want this to come off as a criticism at all because I am truly appreciative of the hard work that goes into these.
With that being said, I am curious to know why the original filesets (as in, the .shn filesets) are still the preferred method of distribution over .flac.
With the ability to convert to .flac with the click of a button and the increased usability and portability of the .flac format, it just seems that it would be a better idea to spread these shows in .flac
Again - not a criticism, so don't flame me or tell me I am unappreciative - I am. I am just curious if there is a specific reason why .shn distribution is still favored. |

shn is not favored over flac by any means.
this should answer your question.

can the filesets be converted fom shn to flac? well, that raises a whole other debate which has been debated over and over again. it is better to just leave it as the above 3 lines which is posted in every torrent seeded.

| cool - if it's overly debated, i don't want to add fuel to the fire. i just need to find a good program for OSX that converts shn ;-) any recommendations? |

> shn is not favored over flac by any means.
I call bullshit. Sure it is, FLAC is superior to SHN in every aspect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorten
"Shorten is no longer developed and more mature lossless audio codecs such as FLAC ... have become more popular"
This has been debated over and over, and there is zero argument favoring SHN as a superior format. It's bigger, doesn't support tagging, and doesn't have an active community supporting the code-base.
I, along with many others, look forward to the day when people stop being anxious about converting from SHN > FLAC before distributing filesets. Provide step by step documetation about what was done, and there's nothing to object to.

"I, along with many others, look forward to the day when people stop being anxious about converting from SHN > FLAC before distributing filesets. Provide step by step documentation about what was done, and there's nothing to object to."
you it the nail on the freaking head there buddy. I can't tell you how many people have converted shn to flac and not documented it properly and left the DB with so many questions.
I won't lie. my speakers sound the exact same as listening to flac or shn. I have a wireless bridge that transfers my lossless files to my stereo and it plays. it costs less than $100. but regardless, I can't tell you how many filesets have improper documentation. I am speaking on behalf of myself, and not shnfamily, but knowing we are transferring what "we" know as the original transfer is very important to me/us. it is a tough sell for me/us to seed a fileset that we have no idea what was done to the original fileset because of laziness of documentation.
I/we would like to apologize if it is a PITA to the community but spreading what we know is the true transfer is what is important to me/us. |

"
just one last comment. except for sound my friend. my shn fileset sounds identical to the exact same flac to shn conversion. and if the documentation doesn't guarantee file integrity, my shn fileset is more reliable to myself personally.
also, please understand, I listen to a show and I don;t need my screen to tell em ACDC Bag is playing. I know the song. my screen telling me the song name gives me no reassurances. I listen for the music, not the technology. KNOWING I have files checked with integrity is more important than tagging files.
as far as size. I get offers for 2 1.5 TB drives fir $200 shipped once a month. the small difference is not as big a deal to some people. |

> also, please understand, I listen to a show and I don;t need my screen to tell em ACDC Bag is playing.
(eyes rolling) Are you telling me you always download 3 hour torrents to listen to the whole show? You can't honestly tell me you don't have favorite tunes and have never been irritated about having to open the text file to see where the song is - except the original seeder didn't provide track numbers, they just pasted the set in like this:
2: Boogie On Reggae Woman > Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley# -> Ghost -> Also Sprach Zarathustra > Down with Disease (0:59)
If you always listen to the whole show without interruption, pardon me, that's just incredible. I've read plenty of reviews of certain songs, and want to skip ahead to the good parts. Life prevents me from listening to thousands of performances, so I rely on the community to help me find good stuff. Unfortunately, for those 20 minute juicy outpourings of creativity, SHN won't let you seek forward unless the original seeder was on the ball ... which is more Miss than Hit IME.
No disrespect bvaz, seen your name around lots, just needed to speak up in favor of progress here... |

"SHN won't let you seek forward unless the original seeder was on the ball ... which is more Miss than Hit IME."
That used to bug the crap out of me until I switched to foobar. If you use foobar and have the shn plugin, it will allow you to seek through *all* shns. Not just the ones that have seek tables. Just wanted to let you know about that.
As far as the SHN > FLAC debate goes, I don't get into that anymore. It's like arguing over politics. It's pointless. You're never going to make the other person say "gee, I never thought about it like that...I'm gonna change my ways!".
Anyhow, foobar is your answer (for that at least). |

looks like we listen to music differently ford perfect. it is very rare, and I do mean very rare, that when I listen to music that it is not a set or a show. honestly, I never really understood how people listen to shows otherwise, but music is different to everyone I guess.
I will offer one more counter point and then let it die because this argument is pointless. if life doesn't allow you to listen to full shows and you are basing your listening on reviews, is it really that difficult to convert tracks from shn to flac?
I just want to again reiterate the purpose of the priject. to spread the tunes in the original fileset, whenever possible. this way, we all know the integrity of the files. there are just way too many examples of filesets out there that were converted from shn to flac and not documented. if you can't figure out what was done to the files, you can't say for sure if it went from shn to audio and then EAC's to flac. |

I'm sorry but I really need to know if this comment was serious.
"(eyes rolling) Are you telling me you always download 3 hour torrents to listen to the whole show?"
I'm still shaking my head over that one. no disrespect. honestly. I can understand not having time to listen to everything out there in its entirety. but to think it is unusual to download and whole show and to listen to the whole show just baffles me. |

> I'm sorry but I really need to know if this comment was serious.
For Phish, yes. I have favorite shows, favorite sets and favorite songs. I can't listen to music at work, so I am constantly on the lookout for highlights from the thousands and thousands of sources.
> I'm still shaking my head over that one. no disrespect.
Haha, yet that's how it reads.

well, I say things all the time that I end up shaking my head over.
I guess people listen to music in different ways. I can see why you want everything in flac and I am sure you can see why it makes no difference to me.
in the end, we all need to remember to enjoy the music, whichever format it is in.
ironically, this discussion took place when the two torrents were actually flac filesets. another thing that made me shake my head. |

A little late returning, but appreciate the peaceful reply bvaz.
Just to give you an example of my listening habits: listening to 12/3/97 tonight, via Stan Lobitz mk41. There's a section during Hood, between 7:00 and 7:20, before things pick up, that is absolutely flawless - jaw dropping beautiful that has made me stop and replay it about 15 times in the last 20 minutes just to confirm what I heard. (Add 30 seconds, add 1 minute - just to get perspective on how it came about... start from the beginning )
Ironically, the above example was SHN, so I had to extract to WAV to truly enjoy.
Anyways, apologies to the orginal 6/16 seeder. |
