I'll take a chance on this. My experience is that generally early 80s AUDs need some sweetening, usually low mids are a little lacking, that's one reason why Charlie Miller is so treasured. He can fix this stuff up pretty well. I honestly think he has better ears for a mix than Jeff Norman does... I think Jeff tries to bring out ALL the music to a certain level, when the Grateful Dead sounds best wehn a certain mix is achieved that, A) favors Garcia on top, mixes vocals slightly in front, but not too far out front, and the keyboards, bass, and Bob need to be mixed judiciously so that they are not ALWAYS HIGHLY discernible, but so that when Phil digs in, he goes to the front, soundwise, when Bob kicks it in, he goes more out front (but never all the way ala Garcia), and when he lays back he's almost like the acoustic guitars in a Stones song, there, but not demanding attention, sonically speaking, and the keyboards lay down a fairly steady and fairly discernible carpet of sound for the rest of the string players to lay their stuff on top of, keybaords should always be discernible, but should vary a bit (as they did in concert). Important: THE CONCERT SOUND DYNAMIC NEEDS TO BE PRESERVED, instead of pusihing everyone out front all the time... J. Norman, PLEASE TAKE NOTE! Be more faithful to what actually went down that night, INSTEAD of trying to mix live sound to compete with a studio recording. It's apples and oranges. MATTER OF FACT, one of the reasons In The Dark succeeded and Built To Last did not, was that the live dynamic was preserved in In The Dark! I wish you could understand that and MIX ACCORDINGLY!!! Of course Phil and Bobby want to be upfront all the time, that's called EGO, but IT DOES NOT make for the best mix!!! Listen to Garcia's original mixes on the live albums, and even Owsley got a great balance (and a true, accurate and faithful rendering of what the live show sounded like) in his recordings and with very few mics!!! (Lots of microGRAMS, very few micRroPHONES!!!).
So, I'll check this out, thanks! Does the next night exist in this format? Ovbviously, that is one of my all-time favorite shows!!! |

| lol. Nice thoughts there man but you're acting like these cats have multi-tracks to work with. No one is able to adjust the level of individual instruments on a two track audience source. What I've noticed about CM is that he doesn't monkey with the sound much at all other than filling gaps, speed matching, and clean digital transfers. Get the most accurate transfer of the source material and let the folks at home EQ for their own rooms, systems, and ears. Thanks for the new source here! Always nice to get a different take on material you "thought" you knew. |

Amen. Clean transfer, very little monkeying around with the sound. EQ it on playback to suit your sound system / room / ears. Done.
If you have a minute, feel free to let me know what you think about the sound quality of this particular recording ..... once you actually listen to it. These comment pages are the best feedback a taper/transfer/editor guy can get to see if he/she is doing a good job.
I AM partial, but I think this recording is outstanding. At another individual's request, I did about a 3-song side by side comparison to shnid #94404. That source is excellent, as are most of the sources that circulate of this show. To my ears this source is an upgrade from 94404. I have not checked it against any other source however....
And yes, the next night was captured with the same exact gear, same exact spot. Another amazing listen, that one. It will be forthcoming...

WE NEED MORE EARLY EIGHTIES AUDIENCE SOURCES. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE SITTING ON MASTER RECORDINGS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TRANSFERRED WE NEED TO GET THEM OUT IN CIRCULATION...

| Holy Smokes!! I just got home and went straight for the headphones to hear this, it sounds absolutely beautiful. Much better than any other source I've had. Recordings of this show often have a weird boxey sound to them that i don't find pleasurable to listen to, and this source has none of that quality to it. I'm so happy to finally have a recording worthy of the performance. Thank you so much for posting this. This was my 3rd show and the night after this was so powerful it changes the course of my life forever. |
