Hello all, finally got some time to sit down and do the mixing on this. We had a ton of fun patching this all together, hopefully you'll enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. Joe, Dustin... a blast hanging out and collaborating on this one as always, thanks for letting me play mad scientist... yet again. :)

Enjoy folks.

I just added this one to the etree database:

Nice work, thanks John!
discocape 2009-09-12 09:11:11
can you elaborate on the 7 channel bit or at least the difference btwn 6 and 7 channels (besides being one more channel : ) )
looks quite interesting anyway, looking forward to a listen
taperj 2009-09-12 13:22:48
Heya discoape, sure can. Joe ran a microphone that has the capability of running "Mid/Side" or "M/S" This particular pattern is unique in that it uses one center panned channel for its "Mid"(middle channel), then it also employs a figure 8 pattern on the other channel, this figure 8 gets the "Sides", basically 2 circlular pickup patterns to the left and right. When recording M/S in "discreet" mode, which is what I opted to do on this, I recorded the undecoded M/S in 2 channels. This gave me one mid channel and one side channel(added with the other 4 mics that makes 6 channels), the M/S cannot be used properly until it is decoded, specifically the side channel. To decode the side channel I took it into audacity, clone the track and panned left and right(from 1 track I now have 2 tracks), on the right hand channel we now flip the phase. At this point when you add in the center channel it clarifies and you have 3 channels(center panned mid/stereo sides) that when mixed down will be a stereo mix of the middle and sides. Recording "discreet" and manually decoding allows for the greatest flexibility when mixing this format, it allows you to alter how much or how little stereo effect you add in. There's a very informative wiki entry about it here if interested in learning more:

http://www.wikirecording.org/Mid-Side_Microphone_Technique

Hopefully this is enough info :)
Cheers,
J

Thanks John, - Can't wait to see you guys in Cali too...
caymanreview82 2009-09-12 15:12:01
thanks for doing the hard part John!
danksta 2009-09-12 21:45:24
WOW! Thanks for all the hard work. MY god as aud taping come a long way from when I began collecting analogs.

Thanks to everyone and involved and the taping community for making such great recordings.

I'm on year 3 of my "return to babylon" aka working 8-5 and these tapes help me stay connected to the scene I loved so much but couldn't stay with due to personal demons.

I thank you
discocape 2009-09-13 05:30:44
I follow ya, thanks again
Cali's get's close, hope to see you there : )
