Here is last night's Son Volt show from the mighty Majestic Theatre in Detroit. Had not caught a show here since Galactic several months ago. I have not seen these guys in quite some time. I was looking forward to the show as Jay is one hell of a song writer! I got their at about 7:20 for the 7:00 doors that were still not open. I entered without a pat down or search, and set up in the Sweet Spot, about 28' from stage. I was visited by many folks before the start of the show, more than the usual, that wanted to know where I was going to post this show. Lots of interest. We exchanged emails and many of them had been grabbing some of my torrents already.
After a nice opening set by the Sera Kahoone duet, the boys hit the stage to a very anxious crowd. They opened up with The Picture and kept it going about 2 hours! Some of my favorites were the newer song Pushed Too Far, Tear Stained Eye, No Turning Back, and Windfall from the encore. Some of the slide guitar and pedal steel interplay during several songs was stellar! These guys were downright tight, and that goes for the harmonies as well as their playing. I have taped several shows and uploaded them relentlessly, but this here show to me was a gem. It has my recommendation. Even if you are not a huge fan of Alt-Country, it is at least worth a listen.
Here is an interesting thought: What if Jay and Jeff Tweedy could settle their differences and put on a show or mini festy, that would feature a set from Wilco, Son Volt, and then Uncle Tupelo? I would buy my ticket NOW! Here is another thought: World Peace!
Great hangin' with Bob, Jeremy (Thanks for the setlist help), and Brad. Where was Ivan and Kasle? On the way out of Detroit, I could not resist the MGM sign as I approached the I-75 interchange. I went in and spent about 25 minutes on a $15 Blackjack table. The Gambling Gods were kind and I walked out with $55.00.
Dinner tonight was Spicy General Tso's Chicken with Fried Rice, and an Egg Roll. Yummy. There are a couple of songs we were not quite sure of, so any help would be appreciated.
