Wow, these keep coming, and fast! Thanks for all of your work.

^The Trix are often made with a pressure cooker. It enhances the fullness of the flavor somehow.

anyone had a chance to compare this with gd1991.09.26.Boston.GEMS.AmdigMatrix.101543.flac16 that recently surfaced? Either way, love the artwork as usual!
mrcharlietoldmeso 2009-10-07 13:02:37
(im sure they're both more than worthy, HD space is a very serious issue at the moment is why I ask)
mike999 2009-10-07 13:49:57

This is pretty good but at this point is for "completists" only. There is a major upgrade that can be found here:

http://www.shnflac.net/details.php?id=7aaf45988d99d66ce1a8025655b90435d5eba4a4

- This version is incomplete
- Uses an incomplete transfer of the AUD
- Uses an incomplete transfer of the SBD
- Inferior and flawed transfer of the AUD
- Inferior and flawed transfer of the AUD
- Has issues after the tape flip in Cumberland
- Patched dropouts that are fixed on later transfers
- This uses AUD source only for Pre Dark Star tuning set 2

Maybe some other things, plus, hey there is a new GEMS version. Need I say more?

What is sad is that the complete text file wasn't posted on this torrent so people could read the flaws and know clearly what they are getting. Hopefully the text file included clearly indicates the problems with this source. As good as it is - it has an upgrade and that should be more obvious to folks. Especially since this version is incomplete.

From the full text file:

Notes:

1) SBD source was about 1.5% fast.

2) Cut in the SBD between Cumberland and Moon, before encores, and for the first two minutes of the recording. Brief cut in the SBD near the end of Saint. Sizable Cuts in SBD and AUD during Space - these cuts did not overlap, so the whole song is now present. Brief dropout in the AUD mid Attics.

3) Because of just plain weirdness in the Tuning track of the SBD in set 2, which was mostly the Fishman patch, I opted to only have the AUD play.

4) I noticed some faint clicks/static in the SBD here and there.

"This is pretty good but at this point is for "completists" only"

Far from the truth, dannyboy. With such an unusually thorough critique of this matrix, some important points should be made here:

This does have a unique sound to it - not better or worse - that some might prefer, and it is the complete show, and it is pitch corrected, in any case. Most matrixes have gaps in the sources, one way or another. I could not help but sample Dan's amazing work on his matrix of this show, and I am left thinking this HS source has more AUD mixed in, with more live energy sound shining through. That may not be your cup tea, but it certainly may be for some, myself included in this case.

The whole "new GEMS version. Need I say more?" bit is obviously a biased stance. Matrixes should be compared on their own terms, not because you think GEMS sources trump all other sources.

Moreover, I am sorry the original text file not being readily present in this reseed project - which is yet still available in the seed itself and via the etree link on the same page - has caused you to feel sadness or pity for this matrix. I personally don't feel flaws in the sources need to be indexed like an encyclopedia and dwelled upon. All sources are flawed on some level. I do, however, mention flaws that I feel are worth mentioning in the info files (of the original seeds/torrents), but my intention is hardly to withhold useful information from folk. I am obviously making an aesthetic point for this reseed project by not including text files on the display page of all known flaws, just as Dick's Picks did not index the flaws. They CAVEAT EMPTOR'd it can called it a day.

Anywho, I highly recommend this source as having a unique sound that is comparable to the Haugh source, and it may even be more what you're looking for.

Enjoy!

I should also add that, from my experience, what one may refer to as an "inferior and flawed" source may actually serve matrix purposes better than a "superior and less flawed source." The "best" AUD, for instance, is not always the best choice for a matrix.

peace

Loosing your touch their Hunter..Kidding,Kidding. OK first Thank You so much It must be a gas for you to matrix some of our favorite shows. I have listened t o a few but my hard drive has probably ˝. Sound Great. Fun Stuff! Second, I don’t comment much on er certain web sites. Thirdly Yes indeed E I have been collecting bootleg tapes since I was a wee lad. NPT=No perfect Tape…. A mantra I had and still rings true. Wobble to the Dark Star or a cut CC Rider. NPT, I agree with your comment 100% about your thought process when sharing one of your masterpieces. NPT, and there is still that day to come when a careful listener is still able to filter out tape hiss with his mind…Peace.

This Matrix is the SHIT! And someone tell me why this wasen't dicks pick 17? Far better show than the previous night..... in my opinion? And Hunter... I think your best matrix... assuming this is the same one put up last week? Someone pose an argument that this wasen't the best jack straw w/ hornsby
desdave 2009-10-07 22:38:04
I loved this when I got it a while back, and I love the new GEMS source as well... both a little different flavor of the the same treat. Lets face it, you might prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla ice cream but it is all pretty damned good after a fatty!

I think this was not used as the DP17 because it was the obvious choice, and I think Dick always tried to find nuggets people never paid attention to (IE: While picking a May 77 show for DP3, the obvious choices were all passed up for the eventual choice that wasnt in as heavy rotation... or any rotation frankly, of many tapers)

And lastly, the best Jack Straw with Bruce Hornsby was 4/28/91 with the whole 'rattlesnake coiled up in the desert' tuning jam to kick it off. That would be a sweet fucking matrix right there Hunter!

...Inferior. Fucking kook-meier!
wh1pnk 2009-10-07 23:44:33
And I bid you good night.
t-stick 2009-10-08 09:46:56
Hey, dannyboy1V, I would've prefaced those comments with "Hey, not to be a dick or anything" (cause I can be), and though I highly respect an individual's opinion (depending) and respect the right to speak out, your comments seamed a little brazen (strident?) and the information perhaps not thoroughly fact checked. Nevertheless, thanks for the info. and point of view.

THANKS, HUNTER!!!
t-stick 2009-10-08 09:48:53
I want to add for the record, I've been let down by many more GEMS than Hunter Matrix shows... but my bar is extremely high (or maybe it seems that way since I'm so low, and speaking of Low, check it out, and Christiane F., also!)
sea2speak 2009-10-08 10:48:01

I like plenty of AUD in my MTX too.

Thanks Hunter, the mix is excellent!
