Here is last night's Pat McGee Band show from the Magic Bag in Ferndale. I must admit, I have not seen this band in almost 8-9 years, since a show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta close to the turn of the century I arrived at about 8:10, only to be told NO taping. Of course I was a bit upset as these guys have always been taper friendly and are on The Archive. I even looked to see recent activity. So, since I did my homework, I felt confident about recording. The 2 guys at the door thought otherwise. I asked to speak to a manager. The one dude said I AM the manager. I pleaded with him assuring that Pat was indeed taper friendly. I asked if he would call Jeremy the owner. Not happening. I had to wait for the manager to ask Pat if it was okay to record. Finally, I pleaded one more time, never sounding unreasonable or raising my voice. He said if I am not on the list, I can;t tape as this was their policy. I then said I was not on the list when I taped Ekoostik Hookah, Karl Denson, Soulive, or Grey Boy. I guess he got tired of it and waved me in. I did thank him and set up on the rail. He came don a few minutes later and said he was still awaiting permission. In the meantime, I grabbed The Elms manager and asked him to go with me to let the manager know it was cool to record. Just before Pat came on the manager came over and said I was okay to tape. I thanked him and told him I would not lie to him. He kinda backed off and said I know, I have seen you in here a few times previously, but I was doing my job.

After a very short set from Will Dailey, followed by a little longer set by The Elms, Pat and Company took to the stage. Not a great crowd, but you have to remember, Ferndale is basically a suburb of Detroit, one of the hardest hit cities in the country during these horrible economic times. Plus it was a Tuesday night. Those that attended were heavy fans though. They opened up with Must Have Been Love>Elizabeth>Minute. He did stop and tell stories between every few songs The Girl From Athens>Set Me Free was well received. As he has done in the past, he went out into the audience and stood on top of a table and serenaded Stephanie, a fan who was celebrating her 21st birthday. He played Annabel, and at times, substituted Stephanie in the lyrics. I did boost my levels just before this short segment. My favorite song was probably the Hornsby classic, End Of The Innocence. He closed the show with a lng Passion, and encored with Rebecca.

On the way out, I did stop and thank the manager yet again. I think we are now on good terms! For the first time since I can't remember, there is not going to be a Great to hang with section as I did not know a single soul at this show. I can usually go to a show anywhere in the country and know somebody, very rare occurance for me.

Late Dinner consisted of a quick stop at Xochimilco in Mexican Village for the Flaming Cheese with Mexican Sausage, Onions and Peppers, served with freshly made Tortillas! It came in a takeout container that was quart size, enough for a family of 4! I put a nice dent in it, spilling a buch on me as I headed south on I-75.

Enjoy show # 254 of 2009!

Awesome, thanx for the extended efforts Z-man.

I saw these guys last year and they were tremendously tight on a low-key CT night. Great show.

thank you for sharing ... I envy your ability to get to so many shows and thank you for your hard work taping and sharing them with all of us.

Isn't The End Of The Innocence a Don Henly song?
wkl_taper 2009-11-19 07:25:40
End of the Innocene written by Hornsby, recorded and made popular by Henley.
