camredden, I feel you have some legitimate complaints here. Yeah, it IS really annoying when you go to search out a song in itunes, and you are hoping for the full song to be played but it is split for no good reason other than it has a nice little jam. zman does seem liberal with his tracking. I mean, No Sugar/ New Mother Nature is ONE SONG on all the radio stations I listen too, and I am damn sure the band thinks of it as ONE SONG, so why split it up into two songs? It is not like they ever split it into 2 with a chilly or what ever in the middle. The way I see it is some people want to make little nuances with their setlists to make the show more "unique". All in all, it is inaccurate.
Zman I would go with Everyday Companion for a good guide on setlists. Don't call segues where there aren't any.
i mean, one of the biggest monster jams on DVD is in the middle of Pigeons on TEWSY and it isn't labeled there because the band obviously regards it in the confines of the song.

| Actually zman, I am sorry for berating you. You do people a service and I am grateful for it. I was wrong for being so critical of you. I can always buy the soundboards from the band website if I don't like something about the way you do things. That being said, I think if you take what is positive about some of the criticisms that were stated, then your final product could be more solid and stand the test of time better. Split up tracks can alter the flow of a song if you want to listen to just that song. Again, I do appreciate your effort. Sorry. |

Hey camredden,
I do not hang out on boards and participate in gossip. Not do I usually answer when some unappreciative toolbox bitches about my work. And yes, it can be work. Do you think for 1 minute, that tapers spend thousands of dollars on decent equipment, haul off by car, train, or plane to get to a show, spend money on hotels, parking, food, and other transportation to and from venues, record the show in sometimes adverse conditions such as having drunks nearby or in a thunderstorm as in an outside recording, go home and wave a magic wand and voilah, the show gets uploaded? It usually takes me a couple of hours to re-bit, re-sample, put fades in, track out, flac out, write text files, create a torrent, and then upload it. This is probably way too much for you to fathom.
I share ALL my music and I make it a priority to do so in a timely manner! I can't tell you how many shows I leave with a cocktail napkin or scrap of paper with a name and email scrolled on it from individuals that would LOVE to get a recording of that show. I have had the good fortune of SO many endearing music fans, that come up to me out of nowhere at any show and say, "thanks for recording man". It is a warm feeling. And almost always they have offered to purchase a drink or other kynd gestures. I do it because it is a total pleasure. No one owes me a THING!
Tracking is subjective. There is no right or wrong to tracking. I am simply astounded that you have a problem with it. If I put up a set with 10 tracks, 8 songs and 2 jams, close your eyes and listen. A track does not effect how it sounds. Do you actually sit in a chair and watch the numbers change on a particular cd? I can do a blind test with you and show you how you are over reacting. Here is my theory, sad that I have to justify myself to you to begin with! I can put you in a chair and start the music in the middle of "jam", and I would bet you could not tell me what song it is. When I label a jam, it has it's own entity. It is a separate sound from the song it came from. That is my rationale and I am sticking with it.
Here is some ideas/options for you:
1. Go out and purchase thousands of dollars of equipment and haul it to shows in all kinds of conditions and record the show yourself.
2. Download someone else's source that can track it to your specifications and appreciation.
3. Do not go near my source or heaven's to bid download it.
4. Download my source and retrack it to your own specifications and appreciation.
5. Get a fucking life!
There are 5 options for you, I suggest #5!
WP Grice, easy to jump on camredden's bandwagon huh. Feel free to read the ideas/options as well.
Medley, I take what you say with a grain of salt, or actually a jar of salt. This coming from someone who's 6 favorite bands are:
1. Outformation
2. Outformation
3. Drive By Truckers
4. The Captain and Tenile
5. Neil Sedaka
6. Outformation
And aren't you the one who realized halfway from Cockville to Knoxville that you forgot your rig. Actually you did have 2 mic stands in your trunk so I guess you had something to show!
Have a great Thanksgiving EVERYONE!

Zman - I love your recordings and I greatly appreciate what you do. I stated that in my first message. If I didn't love your recordings I wouldn't care so much to offer feedback to make them truly great in my mind (and others!). I thought you might be interested in hearing some feedback and "noise" from the water cooler. I apologize if I have offended you - that was certainly not my intention. It isn't a big deal - it is just an opinion that a professional such as yourself can choose to welcome and act on, or shut down. It is all part of the game.
Happy T-Giving to you too and keep rockin' the great recordings. |

I think you took what I said the wrong way. PLUS, if you split No Sugar into 2 songs......I mean uh...man...why would you do that? It is just weird. Did you know it is one song? I am serious here.
I understand your logic on some of the jams. It IS a different entity but it is sometimes nestled so nicely into a song that I see no reason to separate them out all the time. Some of the time yes, but sometimes no. I understand you are doing your best and going with what you think is best, and I am just stating an opinion of what I think you could do to improve your product. Is that not okay to do? Again, I am being serious. If you absolutely don't want feedback EVER on your recordings then that is OKAY. I just thought you would like to know what some consumers may think and feel from time to time.
