From Don Wolfe:
"I was just beginning to collect and trade Grateful Dead when I got this soundboard.
At the time I was actually looking for a recording of the 8/27/72 Veneta show, which
I had had the good fortune to see in person.Since the Springfield Creamery (run by
Ken Kesey's brother Chuck) had put on the Veneta show, I figured they would know who
might have tapes. So I called up and asked, and I ended up contacting the people who
had filmed the concert for the "Sunshine Daydream" movie.I visited them at a house
near Pleasant Hill in Ken Kesey's general neighborhood. They were reluctant to give me
a reel-to-reel copy of Veneta since it was the soundtrack to their movie, but they
did give me a cassette copy. During the time I was hanging around copying tapes, I
found out that they had traveled along with the Dead on the Europe tour, and I ended
up getting a reel-to-reel copy of their tape of the 5/26/72 show at the Lyceum in
London. The source tape player was an amazingly compact machine, with all of the
electronics and motors in a box (as well as I can remember) maybe 10 inches wide, 6
inches tall, and a couple of inches deep, with extension arms that could hold 10 1/2
inch reels. I made a couple of visits and on one of them I got to see an early
screening of the movie. They set up a screen behind their house after dusk, and a
bunch of people came over to watch. The picture and soundtrack were on separate films
(the sound track was on magnetic film with sprocket holes) and had to be synchronized.
Another time we all went swimming. They were kind and generous to me, and I will
always be thankful that they were willing to share their recordings".

RE: "but it looked like crap" That's cold, slaw.
OK, no merely for the humor, I've seen some footage that looks rank amateurish a bit, also, but I'm not named slaw, am I? Sorry, THAT was cold (slaw). OK! Enough already!
Anyway, enough "cold, slaw" for breakfast, thanks for this. It is appreciated.
BTW: What really did get me was the line about "you know what they say it only takes that one time" SO TRUE. It also tells me you are a "real Dead Head", which to me means YOU GOT WHAT IT WAS THEY WERE LAYIN' DOWN, and it wasn't just music, it was the music when the sails of the ship captured that metaphysical wind (was that a fart? No? OK) and the ship started sailin'! The phenomenon that occurred sometimes at Dead shows where the music played the band was second to no other experience in life pon a certain level. Right on, cheers, and thanks again. |

Just to be wordy, I know at least a few of you seemed to be scared of words, especially LOTS OF THEM. Perhaps you still haven't shaken the notion (from around 1992 or so) that the space words take up on bulletin boards and servers are EXTREMELY VALUABLE. Well, look, when multi-gigabyte sets of music are being posted regularly, the few bytes (NOT kilobytes, NOT megabytes, and certainly not gigabytes!) that a couple of paragraphs of words take up are not "too much", unless, of course, you are one of the people who either never learned (or liked) to read a lot, OR you were raised after, say, the '70s and the e ducation you got WAS SEVERELY LACKING and they never taught you the value of reading, grammar, etc. Nevertheless, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO READ ANYTHING, so if you don't like it, do like Moses did (ridin' upon a guitar, no less) and get the flo0ck outta here, OK.
For the rest of you who are not scared of words and may even vbalue them (I hear my inner Frank Zappa voice coming out...), check this out:
http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/bands/Grateful_Dead/Reviews/Steppin_out_with_the_Grateful_Dead_England_72.htm
It lists everything on "Steppin' Out/England '72", so you see what comes from where and how this show fits in to that scheme, There might be one for "Europe '72" also, but I hven't run across it recently (or perhaps ever, but it seems vaguely familiar).
TO THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T LIKE LONG POSTS (or don't have the patience and/or mental capacity to digest more than say, a very short 3nd grade, and I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, it may be 2nd, OR 1st grade, reading level paragaph):
If you really want to show you ignorance and general assinine demeanor, you will post what I wrote IN ITS ENTIRETY, and then make a very short comment on it, just to show "what a jerk I am" for posting A LOT OF WORDS (OH, NO!!! WORDS!!! RUNNNN!!!!!), and how cool you are for making a brief comment (which actually perhaps indicates that you are not adept at actually writing more than a simple sentence, if that). What's the deal? I'm sick and tired of the almost militant attitude that long posts are somehow harmful or inappropriate. I read "The Gulag Archipelago" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn YEARS AGO, it is EVERY LONG, and guess what? I loved every minute of it. Now go read "War and Peace" (Tolstoy), and then come back here and complain about my lengthy prose if you dare, or... GET OVER IT ALREADY! There is more than enough room to post as many words as anyone likes at any time. Get a life, or better yet, get a MIND to go with your oversized (proverbial) mouth. THIS IS ONLY DIRECTED AT THE ILLITERATE BELLIGERENTS WHO ARE ANTI-LITERACY! HEY, ever notice how Garcia frequently rambled ON AND ON AND ON in interviews? Yeah, there is no disgrace in being as verbal as Jerry Garcia, OK? Sheesh. The ignorance and mediocrity of the masses never ceases to amaze me, that's why literate Dead Heads, and Dead heads in general, will probably always be a minority (who don't ask for "special protection"). OK, let the music play! ...and peace and right on to everyone else, love ya'll, have a great day. |

| Nice post! Hey Eric, you are right on point my man. I believe it was P.T. Barnum (I might be wrong) who said you will never go broke by underestimating the stupidity of the American public. Truer words were never spoken. For what it is worth I find your posts HIGHly entertaining, keep up the good work and have a good new dickade, I mean deacade (A quote from Mr. Weir) |

| I listened to 94452 and 89641 (Morning Dew) on the LMA and prefer 94452. It has a richer low end, and the high end noise, while audible at about the same level, is more consistent. 89641's hiss has a variable, "breathing" quality that I find distracting. |
