During the winter of 2009, Medeski Martin & Wood embarked upon a 12 date tour of the northeast and midwest. Thanks to the gracious efforts of various tapers, we have recordings of 9 of these shows. Of those 9 recorded shows, MMW began 6 of them with improvisations. This release collects those improvisations (and a few extra tunes that I couldn't help but include) in one place. In addition, this collection fits on 3 audio cds. Unfortunately I had to cut 11/15/09d1t3 into 2 parts to fit this onto 3 audio cds, but you won't even notice the cut if you listen to it from your computer. -RandyB (1/18/10)

Cool Randy -- took the project right out from under my digi-nose! HA! But, I've got Improv compilations in the works for 2004-2009 and I certainly have a hard time getting around to finishing any of them! (Especially now that I have all my MMW converted to MP3 and tagged so I can just filter in iTunes to Improv tracks.)
Did you do any editing in terms of fades, normalizing, etc?

Duggy: you can load tracks into itunes as m4a (apple lossless). On mac XLD converts flac to m4a for you, preserving tags. Good idea using a playlist to filter for improv tracks. You can even just play flac directly in itunes via fluke (basically some hacks for quicktime) but it's not as portable (won't copy to an ipod, etc.)
I use the conversion to m4a as the occasion to add names to tracks, copy in the source history in the comments field, etc. |
