Notes:
I received this show in a trade from the taper, Jim Quirk.
This is an excellent FOB of a classic 1984 show.
The sound is clear and upfront, with vocals clearly defined and
an excellent bottom end.
This is a grate complement to the crispy SBD already in circulation.
Many thanks to Jim Quirk for the seed discs and for taping.

*The previous performance of Dark Star was on 12/31/81 at Oakland Auditorium, and it would not be performed again until 10/9/89 at Hampton Coliseum, making it the Dark Star with the most years before and after it in terms of an overall gap. Does this make it the quintessential Dark Star breakout? Perhaps adding to its quintessentiality - apart from a synchronized meteor shower - the last outdoor Dark Star was on 8/1/73 at Roosevelt Stadium, nearly eleven years earlier [and the last (and only) time it was played at the Greek was on 10/20/68, making it a breakout in terms of the venue]. With a very fine performance of the song, and an extra hot show all-around, this was indeed a very special night at the Greek.

I guess any Dark Star laid upon the faithful is a joyous occurrence so it's not really a contest is it?

That said, I am HIGHLY partial to Hampton '89, if only because I was there and I'll never ever forget those two nights.

I also was fortunate enough to catch another one - 4-1-91 Greensboro - from the rail. Thank you GDTS!

Listen closely to this this Dark Star and you will realize it is the quintessential Dark Star. The way Jerry walks up and down the pentatonic scale early in the song is so perfect. The way Bill or Mickey rides the symbols building into the solo is so fricking perfect. A well played song/solo isn't necessarily about technical proficiency but more about melodic beauty. This version showcases their ability to do just that.
