"can anyone comment on any audible differences b/w this and the "Sick Bits" Chappell mtx?"
I wrote the long explanation below in an email to someone regarding the 6/23 matrix comparison with the Sick Bits version - I think some of the points will carry over here. With 6/22, I don't think Chappell swapped the AUD channels as he did with 6/23, and I did not compare the SBD/AUD ratio on this one as I did with 6/23, but I think it may be a similar case as described below. Moreover, this 6/22 version uses the Miller transfer, which was circulated after Chappell made his matrix. I should leave syncliness issues as something for the listener to determine:
"Chris Chappell's matrix of this show is a masterpiece and should be part of any matrix connoisseur's collection. That being said, with Rob Berger's new 24 bit transfer of the quintessential Jerry Moore audience recording, I wondered how much better - or different - we can get with one of the finest shows of 1974. Since 24 bit matrixes have appeared to produce better results (check out 3/9/81, for instance, which is a 16 bit SBD mixed into a 24 bit AUD as well), I thought doing a new matrix, which also privileges Moore's AUD more, may prove fruitful. Conscientious of the stellar mix done by Chappell, I think it's safe to say this mix exhibits a little more of Moore's AUD, which I think will please some folk out there, hopefully. So, with Chappell's matrix, you are getting a clean, stereophonic, up-front, and heavier sound, relatively speaking, and this matrix exhibits a little more ambience and resonance, while taking on more of the "mono" quality of the AUD and the light, airiness of its sound - whether this is better or worse is a matter of personal taste. All this being said, one might not even notice that much of a difference here.
"It should also be noted, in terms of differences, that Chappell's matrix uses a different SBD source (Belkin), which had some previous, decent matrixing done to the first half of Ramble on Rose. I think this was done to that part of the source because there is virtually no instrumentation present in the SBD mix apart from some initially hot vocals and Keith's piano. I was surprised how nicely this section of the Cribbs SBD (without the matrix section) actually mixed with the AUD. There are also some minor differences between the Cribbs and Belkin SBD's in terms of cuts and a few anomalies, but they basically sound the same to my ears, and the pitch seemed to be identical from the parts I compared.
"One other significant difference is Chappell swapped the AUD channels, it appears, to match Garcia's guitar sound in the left channel. I personally like how the guitar is more present in the right channel in the AUD, which helps center the sound, although the guitar still hangs out in the left channel, since that's where most of the sound is coming from for the guitar. I'm not a big fan of putting Jerry so distinctly in the left channel, which happened often in '74 SBD mixes. Because of the more dynamic relationship in the matrix mix (with the guitar more distinctly in the right channel of the AUD, instead of the left), subtle fluctuations in volume levels and in the sync can move where the guitar sound is happening slightly, but the sync is still crispy sounding, and there is no phasing sounds from doing this, or a "conflicting" sound. Having the AUD guitar sound in the right channel actually enhances the guitar sound in the left channel, in my view, in terms of how the brain processes the sound - it has a more enveloping, organic feel. But my brain is messed up, so I'm not sure if folk are going to hear the same thing. " |

the only sick bit i have is from the 6/23 show. & i'll admit it's tough to tell the diff between both mtx's. the sbd of this 6/23 never leaves the pod so i just wanted to say thanks for sprinkling the dust on top. this show is stellar IMHO and for those who have been debating to download, this is a no-brainer. i feel a bit like a grouper but i've never requested anthing before, but here goes. 7/02/73, 11/11/73, 11/21/73, 6/16/74, 6/18/74,
thanks again hunter you sir are the shit!

| ^Yeah the differences may be subtle, but the best way to determine them are on a track by track basis with headphones, as the SBD/AUD ratios can fluctuate throughout a show, as well as the sync, but the goal is to keep them consistent. I never considered doing Jai-Alai Fronton with Chappel's Sick Bits in circulation, but by using all newer/different sources/transfers, I figured it'd be worth a shot, and in my honest estimation, the differences - and/or qualitative differences - are enough to warrant having these options for a matrix of these shows. The 24 bit version will obviously serve 24 bit systems best. |

This is exactly what my ears have told me and what I could only have hoped to express about the difference tween this and chappell's. Chappell's versions of these two nights are prized by me and I too wondered at having another set of these. However, there's no passing up a Seamons Matrix. I definitely enjoy the aforementioned contrast. The "airiness of its sound" is very satisfying and presents a welcome, alternate listening experience. The sound on these two Trix is downright thrilling. I stop dead listening and marvel at the clarity and scintillating ambience, a kind of fluid crystallinity. True gems here.
Very much appreciate your comments and feedback to the question that generated your response here, Hunter. Fantastic work. As ever, thank you!
