* Natalie vocal duet with Michael Stipe
# with "Single Girl, Married Girl" intro
5-second dropout early in track 2.
Tape was labeled 3/31/86 but this differs from the Maniacs timeline
(http://www.maniacs.com/timeline/1986). Natalie also says something at
the very beginning of track 5 about Saturday, and someone in the crowd
yells "No, it's fuckin' Friday". The 28th was indeed a Friday that year. |

track 7 info:
"Counting Song"
[a.k.a. "The Spanish Lady" or "Wheel Of Fortune" or "Dublin City" or "Twenty Eighteen"]
Words & Music: Traditional
This is traditionally sung acappella.
VERSION 1: as sung by Natalie Merchant & Michael Stipe
[He] On yonder hill, there lives a lassie and her name I do not know.
[He] One fine day, I'm going to find her, whether she be rich or poor.
CHORUS:
[She] 'Round and 'round on the wheel of fortune;
[Both] 'Round and 'round on the wheel in me
[Both] Young women's hearts are so uncertain,
[Both] Sad experience teaches me.
[He] 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, and a 5, 3, 1
[She] 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, none.
[He] Lassie, I've got gold & silver; lassie, I've got gooses & land.
[He] Lassies, I've got ships on the ocean all to sail at your command.
CHORUS:
[Both] 'Round and 'round on the wheel of fortune;
[Both] 'Round and 'round turnthe wheel for me
[She] Young women's hearts are so uncertain,
[Both] Sad experience teaches me.
[She] 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, and a 5, 3, 1
[He] 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, none.
CHORUS:
[Both] 'Round and 'round on the wheel of fortune;
[Both] 'Round and 'round turn the wheel on me
[Both] Young women's hearts are so uncertain,
[Both] Sad experience teaches me.
[She] I don't want your gold or silver, I don't want your gooses or land.
[She] I don't want your ships on the ocean, all I want's a good young man.
[He] 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, and a 5, 3, 1
[She] 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, none.
CHORUS:
[Both] 'Round and 'round on the wheel of fortune;
[Both] 'Round and 'round 'turn the wheel on me
[Both] Young women's hearts are so uncertain,
[Both] Sad experience teaches me. |

a few setlist edits:
10 - Scorpio Rising
11 - Thompson's March (?)
12 - Angels of Stone
I have the Austin, TX show from 4/4/86 on disc - if I can find it, I'll be able to confirm track 11 for sure.
For the record, I love the rare stuff - tracks 11 and 12 are my faves of this show!

| Thanks Zeb! Maybe it's just this show, but I found Natalie's voice VERY difficult to understand, which made interpreting the setlist I received quite a task. Thanks for clearing it up for me... |

No, it's not just this show - she is notoriously difficult to understand ;) - she's from Jamestown, NY but sings like she was born and raised in jolly ol' England!
I'm looking for the 4/4/86 disc in my huge cdr collection - there's also a disc of 1986 demos that the record label rejected - maybe I'll run across that one too (now that I've been reminded of spring '86 Maniacs, I want to hear those demos again - thanks for the push!) Once I find those, I should be able to ID track 11 and confirm track 12...
A-hunting I will go, a-hunting I will go......

yup, I was right - track 11 is Thompson's March and 12 is Angels of Stone (they appear in the same order on the 1986 demos disc, which I found after a good hour of searhing!)
Thanks again for the great Maniacs - I saw them 20 says earlier, and it made a lasting impression on me - I eventually saw the band at least 30 times! |

this is very cool, thank you very much. I saw them @ the Boathouse in Va. Beach that spring. I yelled all night for Back of the Moon, but Nat responded that the violin was broken...
Can't wait to hear Back of the Moon. Any chance u have a copy of that Boathouse show?? |
