Was this show really that bad??? Quite a short first set but I think it's a solid second set, and the DAY TRIPPER encore is quite fun!

Garcia looked pale, even from a hundred yards away... It was kind of a weird vibe, especially when the stopped after (was it the 3rd song?) and gave Jerry a break (or oxygen or Persian or blow or what? Probably fluids and oxygen...), and I heard some cynical comments there, one of my friends tripped on a skeleton that asked him for a light for his cigarette (something like that), and the twirlers down the left front of the stage were like a gigantic old hand crank mixer (yes, like mom used to use when baking a cake) and the fine reddish brown California Gold Country dust just proceeded to float ever so gracefully over the rest of the audience... One of those "hippies from the hills" shows, where those onstage were just as stoney and mind blown as those in the audience. It almost had the feel of a family reunion that was opened to the public at the last moment (and were told it was going to be a huge party). That's my impression all these years later. It sounds A LOT better to me on tape than it did there, but then again, most of the show I was up the jill from the band and the sound got weird up there...

I think part of that "worst ever" comes from the fact that it was billed as the "highest Grateful Dead concert ever"... I still have the little orange poster...

Apparently not all the press for this show was so bad. A local music website named this the best concert in the Reno-Tahoe area in the past 25 years:

good to get the worst show! thanx! it holds a special place in Deadhead legend & lore.
