Here is a gem of a show I recorded last night in Decatur, Georgia. I was getting my act together to head to the Variety for Jorma/Bromberg. I was not into spending about $30 as things are tight. I did see them about 3 months ago at the Ark in Ann Arbor, so that being said, I was not as driven to going to the show. I received a text from Benji Shanks, that he was playing in a "Jam" session in the Oakhurst area of Decatur as I was leaving the house. It was at Saba Restaurant, so I called and got the address and directions. I arrived a bit after 8 and saw the tiny stage with Duane Trucks' drum kit sitting there. I was not sure who all was to play. Benji arrived and we caught up on conversation. He showed me where everyone would be set up so I set my rig 4' from the front of stage area. Guarav and Ted came in next, then the Count and Spencer, damn was I in for a treat.
They started just short of 9:15 and played a nice little 45 minute set. The second set began after a short safety break. They were starting to hit their stride. Nick Johnson was in the house and joined on Benji's Gibson with a killer Big Chief Jam! He stayed up there and these 7 guys threw it down! Count M'Butu sang a soulful Stormy Monday, with Benji and Nick pushing each other on some very sweet solos! After the hour and 45 minute set, it was done and I wanted more. In 2 weeks I will get more as they will play here every other Wednesday. I encourage anyone in the Atlanta area to come out and see these guys. I encourage grabbing the recording and I guarantee you will enjoy it!
Great hanging with Alexis, Tamara, and of course these 7 guys!
Dinner tonight was Broiled Crispy Chicken Wings, a Cucumber/Tomato/Onion Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette, and White Mountain Baked Bread with Chris at home.
