I was at this show as well as the MSG St. Stephen a couple nights before. Both shows are great! Most people are unfamiliar with the 10-31-83 show, the final St. Stephen performance. I recommend giving it a listen as well. Nothing will beat the crowd reaction from MSG when they broke it out, but the Hartford performance is definitely tighter.

Yeah, but none of them are very good. They're like 90's Dark Stars - pale shadows of earlier versions. They are fascinating though as markers of the enormity of the band's decline from, say, '77-'78. On the whole, they shoulda left it alone. |

@ jawknee
I completely Disagree! I listened to 10-15-83 St. Stephen last night with headphones for the millionth time, and it is amazing! There are so many people I know that put a negative spin on anything that happened post 1977. Its almost depressing to hear such negativity and a downplay of the 80s and 90s.
have you ever listened to the Dark Star 10-26-89? all 26 minutes of it. Get it. Miami Arena. I was in the 3rd Row.
I dont think your supposed to compare a Dark Star from 1989 to 1970. Its not comparable. |

| the MIAMI Dark Star was insane... I aint gettin' into no huff bout decline & what the best era was. I just wanna say, that Miami Dark Star was a momentous 30 minutes of Grateful Dead history. |

Yeah, I've heard all the Dark Stars. I just remember how we all used to tell ourselves through the 80s and into the 90s, that everything was OK - I mean, the music/band experience has to be validated if we gonna do what we do, tour, be obsessed, the whole bit. What can I say? In retrospect I can admit that, yeah, Jerry disengages from the spirit of the process, slowly and fitfully, beginning in the late 70's, and this wrong-foots the whole band. This doesn't mean tat the band sucks, but their batting average of making compelling music falls, from say 80% in 1977 to 50% by 1981 to 20% in 1986, and then up and at low ebb til the end.
Because it isn't the 80s or 90s anymore, and I don't have to be concerned anymore about how good the band is doing TODAY, there's just very little reason to go into the past to listen to ho-hum Dead, when I can go into the past and listen to AMAZING Dead.
So why take up space here in '83? Well, I was at Syracuse a week later, and remember how excited we were about it all. And, like I say, we didn't actually miss much. And I like to follow Hunter's Trix - if a hot matrix can't inject life into a show, nothing can. |

| 50% by '81!? I'm afraid you may underestimate the early 80's. |

| I dunno - I was there. Things took a big turn for the worse with the Warfield/Radio City run, and never really bounced all the back, esp. in terms of 2nd set action. |

| BTW, nice to hear from you, Hunter - love your work. Sorry about my negativity here. The digital/internet age has allowed me a much greater perspective than I ever had before (what with having heard it ALL now) and this is what emerges from thousands of hours of listening - but it's just my rotten intolerant IMO. Having known intimately lots of junkies, it's hard for me to watch - or hear - another one throw it all away. Listening to later years makes me increasingly sad and angry. |

| Who said "hindsight is everything"? but if, at the time, you were "excited in Syracuse" then at least you had some fun & -on the 15th anni of JG's passing - ain't that what's it all about? People's opinions can be argued - but it depends on where they're coming from - I would have killed to see any 83 show. Thanks Hunter for all the fine work! |
