Featroller Review, Repetitiveness Warning Edition:
From the vault of Mr. Cafiero emerges this evidently uncirculated gem, complete with sound just remastered
by our wizard Alex Ford. Whoa! I consider 98-99 to be the beginning of one of the best Feat eras. They were
about to enter the studio to record the great Under the Radar album, represented here by the title track --
one of Bill Payne's finest songs, an all too accurate description of the band particularly during the 90s.
But for those in the know, strong new writing and performances like this one were something to behold.
I'll try to restrain myself about the set list. I've never seen one I like better -- not EVER. Kick it off
with Spider's Blues, the best Feat song that never gets played. Or take Romance Without Finance, one of
Shaun Murphy's strongest contributions, with Richie's drums nailing that unique New Orleans-Feat shuffle.
Or how about the the then-new arrangement of Cold Cold Cold? Paul explains how they had recently recorded it
for Rock 'n Roll Doctor, the tribute album to Lowell George. That cut (with Bonnie Raitt) is one of the best
on that terrific compilation. The way it fades in the middle to just funky percussion and then re-kicks in
for a wailing slide/vocal jam is a prime example of how good post-Lowell Feat can get.
After a smoking set, they come out for the encores and Paul explains how they just recorded a song for an
album for the Nature Conservancy. He says "you probably did it in first grade music class." Then they launch
into the Featerized This Land Is Your Land. Maybe because I struggled to teach many a fifth-grader to play
it on guitar, I was primed for a post-folk take on the Woody Guthrie classic. But this! This is the stuff of
legend. Our country is in the dumps these days. We need a jumpstart to get us going. So once again, I
propose a prescription from the Rock 'n Roll Doctor: replace the worn out Star-Spangled Banner with the
Feat's patented version of This Land Is Your Land. Once we're all boogieing to our new and improved anthem,
we'll be on our way to getting our mojo back.
As if all this wasn't enough, the sound check is included with another Spider's Blues. The most interesting
track is the closer Rocket In My Pocket, here an acoustic instrumental jam with just Paul and Fred. It's a
different take than the one they do for acoustic duo shows -- Fred on guitar, not mandolin, and Paul stinging
the acoustic slide instead of singing. A fine piece of music to close out two full discs of as good as it
gets Feat. To quote the Rock 'n Roll Doctor, it can't be beat.
