Thanks to all the etree seeders that allowed me to download a bunch of the shows used in this mix

you seem to have put an awful lot of work into this and I look forward to listening to it. Thank you

What a sport ... no "tom foolery" in this case ... WOW!
mikefreed 2010-08-05 09:07:50
looks like a nice compilation
thanks for your efforts in putting this together and for sharing this with us.

Great choices here. There were some poor playing times in the 80s, particularly in 86 and some of 84,85. But the 80's were hard rocking hard jamming times for the band. Summer 85 with all its quarks and such is just loaded with incredible show after show.

The early eighties, (and 79) when brent was getting warmed up are just nuts. The tightness of the late seventies, but with a hammond B3 an minus Donna....beautiful in my opinion! The 'revival' that is 87-88 years, and the well documented incredible 89-90. It ended there for me. Thats when I jumped off the bus. As lesh noted, they called that DVD "DOwn Hill From Here" for a reason.

I was 10th row for 9-18-87 and over the years have argued for that Morning Dew's merits...I love the other popular ones, but that one has it all...the first jam is so intense, the second jams build-up...Jerry stretching his vocals in the "guess it doesnt matter" before the second jam...

I could go on an on. For those that dispmissed the 80's because its popular to do so, being a 70's fan is cooler, or you haven't listened to much 80's or only bad 80's (it does exist and is easy to pinpoint because its basically sloppy jerry followed by sloppy band)...give it another shot.

Thanks to etree I have an enormous amount of 80s but Im gonna d/l this anyway and jam it out.

Thanks!

This looks very interesting. The matrix brings the life to the rather thin sounding soundboards of the early 80s. I've generally been into the 70s but this looks like a good intro to some of the better shows of the era.
hseamons 2010-08-05 11:37:24
Mmmmmmmmmmm: 80's matrixes. Thanks for the fun compilation! I've had a big idea to compile EVERY live debut of GD songs available. Now that would be a fun collection. I thought I'd call it "Morning Debuts" or "The Dead Debuts". When I actually started trying to compile it, I became seriously overwhelmed and decided to invest my energies into more matrixing, after I thought I had gotten rid of that bug....

Thanks -- this obviously took a lot of work on your part and I enjoyed the hell out it today at work.

That said, for those of you who are 80s skeptics, I wouldn't choose much, or almost any, of what is here in an attempt to change your mind.

As I listened to this, I thought of many other versions of these same tunes that I would have chosen first, and I kept wondering why some of these versions were chosen at all.

For example, what is it about the Terrapin that makes it a standout in any respect?

That's not a criticism -- that actually was part of the fun of listening to this. And, I really don't know what is out there in a matrix version, so my "comparison" really isn't fair -- no doubt that a great deal of 80s SBDs benefit enormously from a little aud in the mix!

Thanks again for this !

This decde is where I saw most of my shows. Shakedown was awesome, Augusta was just strange. Of the collection I was fortunate to have attend 9 of the shows that these songs came from
hseamons 2010-08-05 22:58:01
Hey, I just figured out what your next project should be: "Grateful Dead Mtx'ing through the 70s live mix"!!!!!!!
meegwell 2010-08-06 00:58:58
come on guys...the 70's are too damn predictable!
hseamons 2010-08-06 01:01:36
^Yeah, you're right, meegwell, now that I really think about it. Nevermind, adam - bad idea on my part. Have a nice evening.
meegwell 2010-08-06 01:02:19
and come on guys, the 70's were driven by (insert famous record producer name) pop_oriented record producers! well at least the late 70's.
meegwell 2010-08-06 01:03:50
and, and come on guys... keith and donna were pretty much a tape recorder on rewind an replay for much of the time...moan and ragtime riffs....
hseamons 2010-08-06 01:04:17
whoa, yeah, I didn't really think about that one either. Good call, meegwell. I've been a little off here in my 70's consideration.
balto7 2010-08-06 05:26:12
Thanks a lot!! This is totally smoking. A lot of shows I haven't heard. We appreciate your efforts.
adam_s 2010-08-06 08:28:03
Thanks for all the comments - I'm glad to read people seem to be enjoying this one.

Hunter made a suggestion for my next project but I think there will be interest here in one that is already done (and was posted to Dime a few months ago). It's a live version of "Reflections" in the same style as this mix. I'll upload it early next week as I'm away from my primary computer now.

With some of the mixes I've done I try to highlight under-appreciated periods or artists. The 70s are so strong, in general, in terms of sound quality and performance, I'm not sure I'd want to break up those shows to create a mix.
