Here is Thursday night's Gov't Mule show from the Theatre in Westbury. Mule was in
the area for a private show on Tuesday, and a Central Park show on Wednesday. It was
painful to be so close and not be able to go due to work. The Mets game on Thursday
was a day game so I knew this was my only opportunity to see a show. The weather was
crummy during the morning, rain. It stopped about 30 minutes prior to the game so
everything was looking up. A long rain delay or extra innings and I may not make the
show. It was a 25 mile ride, but in the afternoon in NYC area.......... I arrived in
the lot about 6:30. Greeted by walking vendors each with about 4-5 Nitrous balloons.
Interesting but I passed. I heard mixed things on being allowed to record here. I
hung with Steve and Leslie, Richie, and Joey in the lot. Seemed like old times. Jackie Greene opened with a nice 45 minute set.
The boys hit the stage just about 9:15. The passing of Richie Hayward from Little
Feat earlier that day was sad. I sent a text to Chris, part of the crew with Mule to
make sure Warren knew that Richie passed and suggested perhaps a Spanish Moon. Boy,
was I surprised as Warren and Company walked out on stage joined by 5 musicians
including Jackie Greene, Jimi Vivino, Mark Evans, and 2 percussionists, and opened
with Spanish Moon. I am sure they already planned on playing this long before I
thought about it. A six song set, but lots of solid jamming. The Kynd of Bird and
Thorazine were long and explored lots of great territory to end the set.
The second set opened with a Brighter Days>Like Flies. Seems I have seen these to
together before. Bill Evans joined on Sax for a hot Devil Likes It Slow. Jimi joined
for the Goin' Out West>Bang a Gong compilation. More guests just like the show
started for the encore. A great combo of After Midnight>On Your Way Down. Never heard
the Mule do this Alan Toussaint classic! A fitting tribute to Mr. Hayward opening and
closing with 2 songs preformed by Little Feat! Nice having Lincoln, bassist from
Warren's earlier band.
Great to hang with Joey, Steve and Leslie, Richie, Angela, and Jim Bad! I thought the theatre was very cool. The sound was very good, but not as good as I was expecting.
Dinner tonight was a slice of White Pizza and a Slice of Buffalo Chicken Pizza from
Cascarinos at the stadium as I was counting out banks and inventories. After the
show, I did hit Bagel Oasis off of the LIE. The fare was a fresh Everything Bagel
with Chopped Liver. Been a while since I had eaten Chopped Liver and this was an
excellent choice.
