The show being at the Casino, was a well posted no audio event, and well announced over the PA on loop pre-show, with the other standard strict Casino ground rules. The Seneca Indians who own and operate the Casino don't mess around, so the rules were all well enforced.
When Nicole and I hit our seats pre show, we came to realize the show was definitely not sold out, the room was very intimate, and not extremely dark being so close to the stage and the spot lights shining on Joan and us. In addition to the uniformed Security guard just above and over my shoulder the entire show, along with another across from me looking down on our section.
Suffice to say I was not comfortable running in the hat with security behind/next to me, as it just wasn't low key enough, and I didn't wear a hoodie.
Although I was not prepared for the job (I would have brought my NOLA bar for better handling had I known), I decided to just go hand held in the hat on my lap. It was better than nothing as I was certain I'd be able to get a good pull even with some likely ruffling, just not comfortable with hat mounting in that situation, but bound and determined to roll.
All in all I am happy with how it turned out, and under the circumstances, I can live with the ruffling. It truly was a great night out. Great seeing Joan again, along with being able to pick up another cd and having her sign it after the show. |

I should add that while I was in the hat on my lap, there were no seats directly in front of me, so I had full exposure to the front stacks, floor speakers pointed out, and Joan's monitors. But it also meant I had full exposure to ushers and security looking at me, thus still the need for the hat.
I should also mention that I taped Joan wide open at Shea's last fall, and even met her after the show with my gear bag and stand in hand.
I think the Casino is just freaked out by taping. We'll see what happens for Rhythm Devils in a couple weeks, as im bringing a low pro stand and expecting to use it.
