This is the second part of my two-part "Mago Appreciation Series" as
there are only two Mago shows in existence(for now). Hope you all enjoy!!
For anyone that missed my remaster of the first Mago show I 'fixed' & wants it,
it is still going strong here:
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=538377
******************************************************************
About this remaster: This was the live debut of Mago & a very HOT show!! The
taper seems like he was in a good spot that night, but the room itself is fairly
boomy & the whole thing sounded pretty brittle in its raw form. After many
attempts, I found & applied an EQ that I feel fixed both those problems as well
as adding some much needed, warm low end. The other main thing holding this
recording back from being a most pleasant listening experience was that the
crowd was just soooo into this night that they were even louder than the loud
music in their appreciation(I have a feeling that this room was very small &
'box-y' with a high ceiling, which would account for both this factor & the original,
brittle sound). I took the liberty of 'wavhammering' the living daylights out of
them at the end of tunes...not so they are gone, just so they don't crush your
ears(if you are listening on headphones) or your speakers. This way, the music
stays loud & the crowd stays soft, giving the virtual effect that you are 'closer'
to the music. There was one crazy, high pitched 'whistler' at this show that I totally
CRUSHED where I could(nobody needs to hear that high pitch at that decibel
level) between the music & softened him when he would go off during the playing.
I may not have found every one as I didn't comb through the entire show(I do
have a life), but I think I took care of most of them. This thing also had SBEs at
every track that I either fixed cleanly or 'fudged' if they didn't link up perfectly
(you'll never hear them or know they were there). I removed plenty of loud claps
cleanly throughout the show...some remain that couldn't be taken out without
leaving an audible 'artifact', but the loudest ones are gone. Also, did some standard
stuff that I always do(made the show seamless from an overlap of the two discs,
Balanced the levels, worked backwards from where the taper settled on his
volume level to make the whole thing consistent from the beginning('VC') &,
finally, retracked to account for the tunes that were missed in the original tracking.
I have worked with MMW for years & still have trouble with all the
names of tunes(because I also work with a bunch of other artists), so I'll leave
that expertise to 'duggy', 'RBayers' & 'newplanet7', among others.
Sit back & let 'er rip!!!!
******************************************************************
VGRM Series: The VGRM(vanillag remasters) is a series inspired by my good
friend Scott Bernstein's BARN series, where I will be uploading (mostly) my
own master recordings, as well as tranfers I have done for friends & associates,
& other shows(such as this one) that I have simply remastered to improved
effect(basically anything I have touched that I feel is worthy of sharing, but
mostly my own stuff). This is all in an effort, like so many of you others out
there, to spread the music far & wide, hopefully get it out there for all time &
get all these DATs preserved on the interwebs & out of my apartment!!
Some of you may wonder why I am starting with this Mago show & all I can
answer to that is, "why not??" I'm just gonna number these as I throw them up
from now on so I can hopefully keep track of them & what better place to start
than with two of my most favorite musicians & friends('MM'...'W', too, of course,
but he just doesn't happen to be on this show--sorry Chris, but you know I'll
put up some Wood Brothers for ya!!)??
Cheers!!
Positive & negative feedback is always welcome, but please, make the negative
feedback constructive criticisms & not just some personal bias to start some
nonsense or something similar. This is a labor of love, people, & should be viewed
that way. |

Thanks for this other remaster, Bill ... the 6/16 gig has a lot more body now thanks to your work -- it's much appreciated! So it'll be fun to hear this one too.
And I'm afraid the setlist you've got is basically the same one I already constructed and posted here for the original source:
http://db.etree.org/shn/85276
... I gotta update d2t06 from "New '07" to Baby Goats on that page though. Anyway, I don't think I can offer any further clarification on the setlist since that's the best I could manage - HA!, but I'll certainly be listening to this tomorrow and I'll post if I hear anything else ...

If I can get Billy or John to sit down & check out parts of these tunes(a tall order), then I
will have further, confirmed setlist info...Billy might actually do it.

Hey--
For those of you calling for Chocolate Genius recordings, check out this recent performance/interview
on WNYC:
http://beta.wnyc.org/shows/soundcheck/2010/aug/23/chocolate-genius-studio/
Also, you may be sad to find out that Chocolate Genius, Inc. is coming to an end after this current, just released
album("Swansongs") & tour. Be sure to grab a copy of this final, amazing effort from the man:
http://www.amazon.com/Swansongs-Chocolate-Genius-Incorporated/dp/B003UIRBEM
Also, catch him on tour because it's the last time that he's doin' it(as 'Chocolate Genius'). It may just be soundtracks for him after this.
He is currently opening for Citizen Cope on a run that starts tomorrow, Oct.8th, I believe:
http://www.citizencope.com/tour
Record anything you go to & just e-mail me if you need permission & I will get it for you.
And now a word from the man himself:
*************************************************
Hello.
Tomorrow, September 14th the final installment of the Chocolate Genius saga will be released in North America.
It will enter a sagging marketplace on a label that has very low expectations for the offering.
For the first time, we made the record completely independently.
Wonderful musicians, great friends, engineers and family all contributed selflessly to bring this music to you.
I wouldn't bother you if it wasn't important to me.
So I ask -
Go to Amazon, iTunes, Best Buy or wherever you feel comfortable purchasing music and pick a copy or ten up.
It's called Swansongs.
And, it is the last Chocolate Genius Inc. record.
Help us prove the naysayers wrong.
Spread this email wherever you see fit.
Just like Love.
Thanks.
See you on the radio.
