gd77-04-27.pre-fm.samaritano.20331.sbefixed.flac16
Lineage:
Pre-FM Master Reel Soundboard->DAT x ?
FM Master Reel Soundboard->VHS->DAT x ?
(Patch for beginning of Promised
Land up to "Georgia Sate.")
Transfer:
DAT->ZA2->Soundforge->.wav->mkw->SHN
DAT seed provided by Dan Lynch
DAT patch provided by Joe Samaritano
Transfer and SHN by Joe Samaritano
11/2/2003
Notes:
Between songs there is some sort of
"matrix switch" to audience, but when next
song starts it switches back to soundboard.
Most circulating copies have this "matrix switch"
cut out and replaced with annoying fades in and out.

Tagging notes:
Show information is embedded within the header
of each flac file. It will display on any player
capable of directly playing flac files.
If converted to wav during processing, all tags
will be stripped, however audio data will remain
unaffected. If you must transcode to a lossy format,
do so directly Flac > Lossy.
Use st5 to validate audio integrity.
Md5 values will change if tagging is altered.

per Charlie Miller 4/13/09
"Just did some checking and spectral analysis does show that the Samaritano seed is indeed a pre-fm. With that said, this new (Moore-Berger) fm source does have a warmer sound. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the 24bit transfer."
On the other hand, I'd give this source the nod.

| Thanks Germain! Can you elaborate on why you like this source over the other? or is it 'Call any Vegetable' :) |

A fm source can have no frequencies above 15 KHz due to the limits of fm transmission. The inclusion of those high frequencies seems to give an overall richer sound on the pre-fm source. But, this pre-fm source has an unknown number of DAT generations which limit the capture off the reel to no better than 16bit/48K. Since the fm source was a 24 bit transfer directly off the 7.5 ips master reel, frequencies below 15 KHz are somewhat better represented, thus as Charlie puts it, a somewhat warmer sound.
In the end, it's just a matter of personal preference. |

the "warmth" actually is a direct result of the FM compression used for broadcast. the smaller the dynamic range can and will take harshness out of the signal. it has nothing to do with the bit rate...
this was default until digital radio (satellite, hdtv, etc..)
now you can find fm compression 'simulators' that mimic that sound you were used on analog FM radio stations.. |
