Artist/Band: Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band
Date: 2010-07-15 (Thursday)
Title: Thanks For The Beer!
Venue: 17th Cisco Ottawa Blues Festival - Hard Rock Cafe Stage (outdoors)
Estimated crowd size: 13,000
Weather conditions: 25° C - 60% humidity - 15-20 km/h winds - 25 km/h gusts - occasional drops of light rain
Source: Open-Air Audience/Open
Lineage: CA-11 Omnis > CA-9100 (1/8" inputs) + CA-14 Cards > CA-UGLY (1/4" inputs) > Zoom H4n > .WAV's > Wavelab Studio 6 (matrix) > Sound Forge Pro 10.0a (normalize) > CDWav (tracking) > Adobe Audition 3.0 (downsampling) > Trader's Little Helper v.2.4.1 build 160 (flac 8, fix SBE's & create .ffp and .md5 files)
Recording location: 15 metres from stage - (just) FOB 1 metre right of dead center - 6'6" high clipped to stand
Sound Quality: EX, A-, 8/10. This recording can't be graded as an EX+ due to the fact that there are a few spots where wind hit the mics so there's a few seconds of rumble here and there. It does not take away from the recording at all. There's also a little bit of noise bleed from one of the nearby stages (Marianas Trench) but it's not often. Susan even makes a comment about it at one point putting a positive spin on it. With no wind, no other bands playing off in the distance and the stand at 11 feet this would have been an easy EX+.

So this amazing show capped off a wonderful day at the Ottawa Blues Festival which included heartfelt performances by both Dana Fuchs & Matt Andersen just prior to Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi taking the stage. The wind was picking up steadily as it got later and I was a bit concerened about that. It looked like it was going to rain and indeed a few drops were felt at the beginning of the show.
Thanks go out to Chris P. for his letting me clip on to his mic stand and to the anonymous man who bought me a beer as I monitored my levels. Both acts of kindess were greatly appreciated. The crowd had been steadily swelling in size until there was not a square centimetre of free space left. Although it’s not exactly where I would have placed the stand, I was now very glad that it was behind the security fence of the soundboard (but still just FOB).
As you’ll hear, this was an amazing show and thouroughly enjoyed by all. Derek & Susan had a rare meet & greet after the show and despite being last in a HUGE lineup, they both were incredibly down to earth and friendly and were not in any kind of a rush. They let me take a photo with them and Susan told me an amusing story about the time she spent in The Dead.

Fight the Loudness War! No compression was used in the post-processing of this recording to preserve it's dynamic range, listenability and authenticity.
This recording will naturally sound much better cranked up loud with quality headphones!
Peace & enjoy,
Seth |
