Not sure exactly why I got inspired to pull out this show as a potential BARN series, but I have truly dug DEEP into the depths of the BARN for my 66th release. This is a long ago Bruce Hornsby show (just after his stint in the Grateful Dead, leaving "the new guy" Vince to fend for himself after a breaking-in peroid) from what was first known as "The Felt Forum" and then "The Paramount Theater" and now simply "The Theater at MSG". This is a wonderful venue and I have had a bunch of good times there (though it's not a venue that I frequent very often, I have seen Van Morrison there a few times -- once with Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, String Cheese Incident, a Blues Traveler/Spin Doctors New Years' show, Neil Young, The Cowboy Junkies, and maybe a few others there over the years).
Anyway when I popped this ancient DAT tape in that I probably hadn't listened to since I recorded it I was taken by the warm and "up close" presence that it had, plus the fun performance by the band (despite the fact that, looking at the Hornsby setlist website they did not vary their setlists a lot at this time [that has certainly changed tremendously in the intervening years]). They are having fun onstage playing with dropping all kinds of jams (mostly, jazz) into their songs, and interacting with the audience. This was back when all I had was a single point stereo Sony ECM-959 microphone, but I do recall being *right in the sweet spot* and this recording proves (as has been proven time and time again) that location rules in recording. Having multi-thousand-dollar gear in a less-than-ideal location in a venue will never be as good as having less-than-ideal gear in the *right* location. And this is one of those cases.
I hope you all appreciate the hours and hours that I spent de-clapping this one -- I think this is the release I have spent the longest amount of time on thus far (in fits and starts over an entire month!!!). Being that this is one of those recordings that has a lot of dynamic range -- there are quiet acoustic piano solo numbers and loud rock numbers, combined with the fact that I had only a small stand and some apparently extremely zealous clappers near me, meant that there were some thunderously loud claps on this recording. I've done my best to comb through the show and eliminate (or virtually eliminate) the worst of them. Also there are still a couple of minor flaws in the recording when, it sounds like, my stand was bumped by people going in and out of the aisle. But on the whole, this is a suprisingly clear and warm recording of a really fun and at this point semi-ancient show.

|Awesome work Scotty!
|Thanks for sharing this.
Bruce disbanded The Range at this time and just went as Bruce Hornsby, as he went solo and pretty much got a whole new band.
This does look like a fantastic show thanks again.
|Thanks for the Bruce.
|Yep, this was the last time I saw them as The Range. He swapped to just "Bruce Hornsby" and then "Bruce Hornsby And The Noisemakers" and he continues performing as The Noisemakers to this day.
I really like the current lineup of the band better than this lineup. JV Collier on bass is a huge addition. And while people love John Molo, I feel like Bruce's music flows a lot better without him.
|thanx a lot for taking the time to fix this up and share it here...I'm a big fan of Bruce in all forms, and I felt the late 90's were his prime years, D'Earth, Reid, and Henry were an amazing combo...Henry's vocals were really something else, and the sax/trumpet duo was really kickin when they were on (which was far more often than not)
sadly, I haven't heard a lot of HQ post-90's Bruce, I like what I've heard, but not enough real good quality stuff to really pull me in...anyone with more Bruce to share is highly encouraged to do so, and I am really lookin forward to enjoying this one as well...thanx again...as a BIG Hornsby lover, this is an early Christmas present for me...especially since I've made a lot of progress on listening to the previous flood of Hornsby, it's about time for something new (to me) though I assure you the "old" ones will not have time to get dusty ;)
|Thanks for so many great contributions!
|@Phishblowz - you might want to check out Nugs.net, where Bruce has released SBDs from some 2009 shows for free.
|Thanks, great list, and sounds pretty good, but the songlist does not match the track numbers. (e.g., st1t03)
|wow,thanks for the classic Bruce!!
|Wow - I forgot about this show. This was the night of the Long Island Railroad shooting. I remember taking the train home after the show and passing the train that was still parked in the Merillon Avenue station. This was before cell phones, so I had no idea what had happened.
Our train crept slowly past the disabled train, I saw the blood stained floor inside the train, only later to find out what had happened.
Thanks for sharing.
|Actually, pgubbiom, the setlist is 100% correct. Track 3 is correctly labeled as "China Doll", a Bruce Hornsby original.
|http://www.livedownloads.com/searchRes.aspx?searchStr=hornsby&x=0&y=0 for some free sbd's of BH 09 the only downside is that they are mp3 but they are high quality.
FWIW The Range ended in 1991 as this line-up was the 'solo' band and as good as they were I am glad Bruce formed the Noisemakers. BH's music sounds better with a guitar in the mix and without Debbie Henry...Bruce's voice is too good to have a back-up plus I didn't dig her belting.
I do miss Molo a lot but I guess he's having fun playing GD covers with Phil.
Thanks again for sharing this source.
|Very nice recording. Thank You
