BARN75: This was a big night for The tiny Lion's Den -- for the first time ever, a member of Phish graced its stage. Setting the scene: I happened to have decided to hit a Radiators show at BB King's club in Times Square on this night. I was set up in the middle of the floor, audience taping for a good (if unmemorable) first set. Sure enough, Curtis Claymont, who was also there with me (but not taping) gets a phone call (how he got the call in BB King's, a basement club where cellphone reception is virtually impossible I'll never know) saying Trey was on his way over to The Lion's Den to play with the Jennifer Hartswick Band and that we had to pack up and leave immediately to make sure someone got it on tape.
So, for the first time ever, I packed up my taping gear after the first set ended (there were other tapers there patched out of the soundboard) and we headed downtown to The Lion's Den. The place was absolutely electric and got sardine-like (at least near the stage) as the night progressed. You can hear the excitement in the crowd as the band returnes for their 2nd set.
Sure enough, the red-bearded-one himself did pop up onstage for the beginning of the 2nd set, absolutely blew the place up and blew us away for 50 minutes (2 songs, with "Night Speaks..." being 26+ minutes on its own) that he played with the band, and then made tracks out of the venue. Unfortunately when a special guests sits-in for the beginning of the 2nd set and then takes off, it's really hard to recover, and as soon as Trey left the stage, 90% of the people in the room emptied out, as did the energy. Picture a balloon popping very quickly as the place went from packed and ELECTRIC to nearly dead (note the lack of crowd . Oh well. Still, the music was great, I had a GREAT time (despite the fact that this is from a time that I was personally anti-Phish and anti-Trey) -- all thanks go out to Curtis and whoever called him to let him know to get down there! I was lucky enough to see Phish in some small-ish places as they were coming up, and I have been lucky to see various Phish member sit in at other small shows, but this stands out as the smallest place I've ever seen Trey play in. I hope you all enjoy this spectacular recording of a smokin' performance 7 1/2 years later!!!
Thanks to Curtis for apparently lending me his Sonosax & AD2K as I believe my Apogee was in the shop for repair on this night.
For anyone who is not aware, The Lion's Den was renamed (and spruced up a bit) "Sullivan Hall" on 1/1/08.
I decided to pull this recording out of my archives after a conversation with Howie (who books Sullivan Hall) about how much fun this night was.
Note that the version of "Mr. Completely" from this show gets a specific mention in the Phish Net song history database, here:
http://phish.net/song/mr-completely/history
"For a rocking live version in a more low-key setting, seek out recordings of the Jennifer Hartswick Band on 11/7/03 at The Lion’s Den in New York, with Trey sitting in on guitar."
Lineup (thanks to Bill Mulvey for fleshing this out for me):
Jennifer Hartswick - trumpet, vox
Ray Paczkowski - keys
John Rivers - bass
Dave Diamond - guitar
Russ Lawton - drums
Andrew Moroz - trombone
Alex Wolston - trumpet
Luke LaPlant - baritone sax
Dan Voss - alto sax
Enjoy!
Scott

first of all, thank you, this looks awesome.
second though, what is with the mic setup? Sorry if this in an uninformed question, but
why have a subcard left channel and hyper right channel? From a relative layman's view
this sounds like it would be really unbalanced. Any reason (practical or random) for this? |

For AChalsey, Taken from one of my previous Sullivan Hall recordings: (basic answer -- it's to compensate for being right in front of the far left speaker)
Everytime I post something I've run in this configuration (with different mic patterns for each mic) at Sullivan Hall, someone invariably comments "What is up with the different mic patterns?" Well, in this room it's impossible to set up in the center of the room unless you set up in the very back, next to the soundboard (or hang your mics from the ceiling). So I generally opt for getting really really close, and taping my stand to a column about 10 feet from the stage. The column is unforunately just inside of the left PA speaker, far off center. So what I do is point the left mic straight at the stage in subcard setting (appropriate when you're 10 feet from the source) to get mostly what's coming out of the PA and some stage bleedthrough and then point the right mic wide to the right (in hypercard to give me a bit more reach) and the ratio of stage volume to PA volume flips -- in the right mic I get slightly more stage volume and slightly less PA. In most cases it works out pretty well, and it definitely did on this recording. The upshot is that you get a bit more guitar and cymbals and a bit less vocals in the right channel. Ultimately I think this is the best I can do given the siuation and I think it sounds pretty stellar regardless (if it wasn't NYE and I wasn't coming from a Phish show before I'd probably have run a SBD+onstage mic matrix). I have expeimented with different configurations, but I think this tends to yield the most pleasing results. It is a difficult work securing my stand on the column, though. |

| Note -- I just noticed this when I was tracking out this show for CD burning -- it fits nicely on 2 discs if you put T1 & T2 from the 2nd set on the first disc. If you take this approach you might as well leave out S2T3 when burning as it is nearly 5 minutes of nothing but dead air. |

It's good to see this show up. I got a heads up about this show from the particle sound guy when they played upstate the night before. I was able to make a soundboard recording of the show and was asked not to distribute it. All these years later it's great that this show is getting out. We take it for granted now but during the breakup it was a big deal to a Phish member play out.
I want to thank Soctt for getting through all these old DATs. It's a lot of work to record and upload new shows let alone make the time to go through the old ones. |

Hey Tufflite:
This should sound significantly better than the soundboard you've got. I know what soundboards from Lion's Den/Sullivan Hall sound like, and this should be a pretty huge upgrade... |

Thanks so much for seeding this. Was right up front for this one. Great night and great fun. J-HA band eventually recovered the energy and latter part of their next set was tight.
Hadn't seen Trey play in a bar since The Front in 1989!
One of my favorite moments was near the beginning of his Night Speaks solo, when Trey turned to his borrowed Fender amp and swept his hand across all the knobs, cranking everything up to 10.
Not so much fun right after the set, when his enormous bodyguard wouldn't let me thru to the restroom. "Dude, I'm not gonna bother the celebrity. I know the celebrity. I just gotta pee..." |
