Thanks for this! I plan on taping in St Louis next week, and was wanting to do exactly what you did...
But I'm really torn, on the one hand I want to record, but on the other I'd like to be the first one in and stake out a front row center spot so I can really enjoy the show, seeing as how they never come here and the legendary status of this tour. I'm hoping Hutch might let me set up my mics and rig within the closed off sbd area (I've taped tons of shows at this same venue, and gotten access to the sbd area a few times), that way I can start the rig then head up front to really enjoy the show and not have to worry so much about babysitting the gear. If they don't let me, I'll just wind up staking out a good spot to throw up my mics and just watch the show from there.
But it sounds like Hutch is pretty receptive to the idea, if he let you do it here. Wish me luck! I'll probably up the show to Dime. |

@Jimf1979- Hutch has let me do this a few time before, so the odds are in your favor. I had a problem with the Terminal 5 venue security when I first went inside. They let me bring my gear in, and originally I was setting up infront of the SBD, and that was when they stopped me and said the band specifically said no stands or big gear. I told them I've taped them before and it had never been a problem, and told them I'd like to wait to talk to Hutch about it. They said if anyone from the bands crew said it was ok, then they were fine with it too, and of course Hutch let me. My point is, if you have problems with the Venue(even though you've taped there before) ask to speak with Hutch. He will help you out. Don't get discouraged.
Enjoy the show! I'll keep an eye you for your recording.
@wikxzen and shinkibo- You're Welcome! Enjoy! |

| Thanks for taping and posting so fast. I was standing up on the raised area just behind the floor-level board near the bar and was really happy to see you setting up before QOTSA's set - there are so few of their shows out there it seems. Cheers! |

You guys are welcome!
@Funktrunks- The T5 Security wasnt going to letting me set up my gear so I had to wait to get the OK from Hutch before I could. I would have liked to record the Dough Rollers, but wasnt able to b/c of that. I had to scramble to get them up before the qotsa set started. |

Thanks for the advice, H2Burn. Don't worry, I plan on being insistent and persistant. I've read a number of stories over the years of people being told they couldn't record, then Hutch coming to their rescue and giving the OK, so that was pretty much going to be my plan if they make a fuss. Hutch rules!
I wonder what they meant by "big gear?" If they pull that on me, I'll just tell them I've got some big gear in my pants for them. Ha no, I won't do that. I only have some cheap stealth mics anyway so even if for some rare chance they don't allow a mic stand, I'm still good to go. I forget the venue's capacity but including the balcony I think it's like 2000, and it's been sold out for a couple weeks, so if I get to set up within the roped off sbd area that would really help as I expect it to be pretty cramped.
Other recordings I've heard from others or personally made at the venue, almost always right in front of the sbd, always sound really nice. Even with my cheap omni's. So I hope to expect pretty good results. A couple times I've even gotten a line out from the board from their regular FOH mixer, but I'm assuming that Hutch will be in control of the board and I don't see that happening. |

| Hutch came thru last night in Montreal. Don't hesitate to ask. He is a supremely cool dude, as the rest of their crew. |
