Notes:
One of the mono SBD channels was the vocal channel and the vocals were very loud in its mix. This particular channel cut out about 50 minutes into set one and was gone for the rest of the set and all of set two.
The mix I made here consists of mainly the on-stage audience recording with just a touch of the SBD, mainly for vocals. [I almost didn't use the SBD at all, since the on-stage recording came out nearly perfectly.] The SBD source used for the first 50 minutes is a stereo mix of both mono SBD channels [except that for the 2 tunes that have vocals in the first 50 minutes I used the same SBD source that I used for the rest of the show, which is explained next. I did this to avoid the extra-loud vocals from the vocal SBD channel.] The SBD source used for the rest of the show is a stereo recreation using 2 copies of the non-vocal mono SBD channel (which had a good mix). - RLBayers

My review of this performance:
The place was packed, first set improv got hot real quick. about 12.5 minutes in George breaks a string. as he changes it, Ivan & June lock in and, as George joins back in, the improv builds and builds until George releases all the energy in the room all when he belts out those first lines of "Let The Good Times Roll." the room goes crazy and the 2nd weekend of jazz fest is ushered in properly.
Nice covers of 2 local NOLA favorites by Jessie Hill & Huey Smith, then Ivan picks a good one with Cabbage Alley, which really allows Johnny to shine, especially as they segue out of it into a jam that George turns into a one of a kind version of Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour. The first set couldn't have been better. I shot video of parts of the opening improv, I stopped shooting while George changed his string, then after he started Let The Good Times Roll & the room erupted, I couldn't help but pull the video camera back out. I also shot the entire last 20 minutes of the set, the last 4 tunes. Since I was in the front row now, it was easy to keep filming and not have to hold the camera up high. Some great video of Johnny playing drums right in front of me.
here is the raw video of the last 10 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br9VAOtCTNM
I am working on syncing this audio to my video and getting it on youtube. I have 67 minutes total of video from show.

2nd set opens with George & Ivan jamming and improvising lyrics off each other. I sent George an mp3 of this to see what it was, he said he sang a little of "Take A Chance" then he thinks the rest is just jamming and singing off the top of their heads.
I thought the 4/29/10 (with Marco Benevento & Skerik) version of Don't Be Squeezin' My Heart (a song from the Johnny Vidacovich song book) was the best I ever heard, but this topped it. Ivan goes soo deep and big on the organ it's insane. I've never seen him unleash his chops like that!
Papa Was A Rolling Stone with Corey Glover helping Ivan on vocals, raw video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22ksBxzZ4DI (this audio hasn't been synced to that video, yet).
Little Red Corvette was a surprise and the audience loved it. Very interestingly, Ivan takes the band into a Leo Nocentelli tune, Come Back Jack. Johnny picks it up but honestly isn't really in the pocket on this one and Ivan gets visibly aggravated.
Mojo Hannah & Let Me Have It All were also highlights for me.
I shot video of Will It Go Round In Circles, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Little Red Corvetter > Come Back Jack, & Mojo Hannah. All of it should end up on youtube soon enough.
All in all, a wonderful way to begin a 5 night jazz fest adventure that found me coming back to the Maple Leaf 4 nights in a row... |

| Damn, Randy. Somewhat inexplicably, this is the first time I've checked out the GPjr section of bt.etree! Thanks a ton - this looks sick. I am currently tracking out my 11.04.10 recording of the same trio as this show. It sucks that I didn't have my external mics with me and had to use the internals, but, hey, it's listenable and better than nothing! - Ryan |
