digs5446,
Is the FiiO actually a USB DAC? What's the highest sample rate and bit depth it will support? |

@ kevinkachel
it's described as a "USB DAC headphone amplifier", so a hybrid i guess, and i believe its max capability is 16/44.
a $100 DAC that could handle 24-bit would be amazing, please let me know if one exists! but from what i've read, the e7 is a pretty remarkeable value for what it does. only barely tested it out at my parents over the weekend, but it's noticeably (and expectedly) better when going via USB from your computer than via stereo miniplug from a phone or other portable player.
i do my AUD source comparisons with headphones hooked up to my Mac, so this is a pretty ideal affordable solution. only slight annoyance (let me know if there's a way around this) is that when i want to listen out loud through my 2.1 computer speakers, i have to go into system settings and change the audio processing from the USB DAC to the Mac's sound card. |

also kevin, here's a tidbit from a review about the e7 that goes to show this is really only meant for headphone use:
"there has been some consternation about the omission of line-out level output from the E7, meaning it is currently not possible to use solely the DAC component"
i guess the fact that it handles the DAC / amp duties together means the DAC component doesn't have nearly the muscle of your typical DAC, but for my budget and uses intended, i'm happy so far! if only my Mac could automatically toggle from the portable DAC -> Mac sound card when i unplug the unit!
here's the full review that quote is from, along w/ some others:

"there has been some consternation about the omission of line-out level output from the E7, meaning it is currently not possible to use solely the DAC component"
upon further research, that issue has somewhat been solved by the e9 desktop dock connector, which does have a line out. but that unit costs more than the e7 itself (~$130). personally my Harmon Kardon 2.1 computer speakers are not good enough to justify using a DAC for "out loud listening". |

(sorry) but allow me to correct myself - FiiO has released a dedicated line-out dock for $10 that allows you to bypass the e7's internal amp and use it solely as a DAC. perfect for listening to music from my laptop over the home theater system!

Thanks everybody.
I apologize for the delay in the 2nd and 3rd nights of Watkins Glen.
I was completely exhausted and incapable of transferring the shows after they happened. I was still phresh first night.
Since I've been back from the Glen I have been busy with family functions, 4th of July holiday and rigorous work schedule. I really enjoyed this Friday night recording and have been burning it out, so suffice to say I'd stoked to get to night 2 and 3.
I am tied down with a show Friday (tomorrow) night, so the weekend is when I should get nights 2 and 3 posted.
Thanks for the patience!
I hope everyone rocked this one out hard. Such a fun listen! I still don't get why people listen to boards when good auds are available. |

| Can't wait to hear nights 2 and 3. I have been holding off grabbing any other pulls because your night 1 pull was the sound I was looking for. Killer!!! Thanks for taping and bringing these shows to those of us that couldn't make it. Peace. |
