This was a really fun show, even on the hottest, smogiest day of the year. We knew they weren't going to invite us back. :)

If anyone is still in contact with John Lech I'd love to hear from him again. I taped with him on a number of occasions and he made some sweet tapes. I lost track of him several years ago. I hope everyone enjoys these. Thanks to Brad and Dave for all you do.

got the next night?
funkbeard 2011-10-29 21:37:02
I was just getting into the Dead, and met these DAT taper/traders on my block. I was at their house, and their taper friend was like "oh yeah, check out Phil's bass on this slipknot!" This was my first exposure to the world of taping. I don't know the quality of this one, but this show lives in my mind as my initiation to the recorded sonic bombs of Mr. Lesh.

Dylanstubs, I didn't know it was the hottest day of the year, but I remember it was 108 frickin' degrees! Great memories from these shows! I've got some nice pics too!

thank you.
funkbeard 2011-11-01 00:26:04
Can you check this? I believe I just converted this to AAC, only to find it's the SBD. Thanks for the waste of time.
jmoleton 2011-11-01 23:43:25
Thanks for posting....I won't be as cruel as the above poster, b/c I and most everyone on here is VERY GRATEFUl for any and all uploads of quality 'free music", but I must also confess that the entire 1st set sounds like a sbd to my untrained ears....and a good one at that. I am not sure what AAC stands for though as stated by the above poster (nutbag)
Oldneumanntapr 2011-11-02 23:43:19
Brad also asked me about the fact that it sounded like a soundboard, but, I can definitely say with some degree of certainty that these CDR transfers are taken from DAT copies of John's masters. (I have 1st gen cassettes that John copied for me directly after the show, but since I had not yet switched to DAT myself, I elected to do the CDR transfers directly off of the DAT I copies that John made for my friend Gene Juteau. I borrowed Gene's DAT copies that had been sitting in a box since the early 90's. Since Gene never had soundboards of the Carson shows (to my knowledge), I don't see how a swtch could have been made. Still though, I will compare them to my 1st gen cassettes.

Funkbeard, you're right. I just compared my 1st gen cassette with the CDR of 5/5/90 and they do NOT match. Gene must have sent me a soundboard of that set by mistake. I didn't realize that he had boards of those shows. I am sorry about that. I'll have to ask him about it, but his memory is not the best. Sorry for any confusion.

As I thought, Gene doesn't remember a thing.

The reason I was pissed at getting the SBD here is that I already went through downloading the SBD, tagging all the tracks, and upping it into my iTunes. This is a sbd through and through, inferior mix to the one already in circulation. In fact, the timings of the tracks from first to last are identical to the circulating SBD source. SO I felt my time was wasted. I know great audience tapes came out of this run, and I used to have one of them. I hope that you are more discerning with what you upload in the future. Call it what it is. This is no Nak300 taper's section or fob audience.
Oldneumanntapr 2011-11-03 20:56:22
I'm sorry that you were upset, but the whole purpose of getting my friend's and my own masters uploaded was to have folks enjoy them. I had no idea when I asked my friend Gene to send me his DAT copies of the show that he would send me a soundboard in place of the audience that I had asked for. Again, I'm sorry that the mistake caused you any grief, but I think you could have been a bit nicer in pointing this out. This is supposed to be all in fun. For what it's worth,

- J.

funkbeard, please let us know what you feel your time and trouble is worth, and I'd be glad to send a check.
