-- THE SHACK PROJECT --
This is an effort to seed all existing MMW shows, and yes, preserving the original SHN/FLAC filesets -- but now with a twist. I am now seeding ID3 FLAC encoded filesets of db.etree sources which still maintains the audio integrity. The seeding will proceed chronologically for the most part, with exceptions as we feel the vibe to seed other gigs from other times.

Thanks to MMW for allowing their music to be recorded....really, thank you.

Huge thanks goes out to the tapers, without whom this wouldn't be possible...and those that have helped get the tunes to our ears.

And thanks to the other 5 guys I've dragged into this and who seem committed to the cause: Louie, Mike Tom, Todd & Jeff....we're all listening to these shows and hopefully circulating the best versions.

All shows listed here in SHN/FLAC will be seeded:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmw

These shows will be seeded as well, either by me or by one of a few other kind souls:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmwaccess

Shows listed here circulate in some manner. We are looking for as close to the original source as we can get so if you can help out with any of the following, we'd all appreciate it:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmwneeds (this list is in the process of being compiled...maybe forever?)

I've started a thread over here for us to be able to discuss this project:
http://week4paug.net/index.php/topic=1573.0

enjoy the grooves

***FOR ALL YOUR SETLIST NEEDS***
MMW Performance History @ http://mmwhistory.com - this is a fantastic resource that allows you to look at info on gigs by MMW and related side projects and guest appearances; big thanks to Tom for creating this page.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are actively updating all setlists as we seed, and also others outside the particular order of the project.

db.etree is also being updated in tandem with the updates to Tom's pages -- both the source and show pages.

... hopefully somebody who grabbed a fileset you need can go back and help you out. Folks, please revisit these old torrents and see if anyone needs some help. Thanks for helping to spread the grooves.
duggy 2011-12-05 13:07:36
Last night of the Northeast Feb run the guys did that year. I remember there being some talk of bad feelings at the end when the band didn't come out for an Encore, and that somebody had been talking with the band afterwards and they (the band) didn't feel the crowd wanted one -- listen to the crowd chatter *throughout* the show to know what they mean! HA!

Regardless, the guys threw down again on this night with some interesting Improv while continuing to explore EOTWPjic material and the covers they brought into rotation in Fall '04 -- gotta love those PJ Harvey tunes! And the Drums'n'Piano outro to Think is pretty sweet!

A nice Gonzo does close the evening ... which is a treat ...

Again, I've ID3 tagged this fileset.

duggy 2011-12-05 14:34:59
Well, dropped the ball today! HA!

I pulled the 3/22/2006 torrent (again) because I may as well fix the SBEs before seeding it -- sorry folks! A new torrent will be up ASAP.
mmwarchives 2011-12-05 14:43:55
No worries, dug...you are doing a great service for everyone.

If anyone cares, the MAGO/Wicked Knee shows will start showing up tonight with Scott Bernstein's pull of NYC, with
Hudson, NY & Philly to follow.
duggy 2011-12-05 15:56:57
Nice, Bill! Looking forward to hearing those!

3 cheers for the TAPERS!!!
newplanet7 2011-12-05 16:29:20
Yeah dug.
When Shackaholic and I taped at te Higher Ground in 2008 it was the same way.
Bunch of chatty bitches.
hcm526 2011-12-05 16:41:48
I was at this show too, and nothing but drunk hippie bitches goin on throughout the entire show! The band was ON and nobody seemed to care. I even remember some asshole throwing a bottle at the roadies when the lights came on. The improv part in the beginning are intense (if you can hear it all...), and Gonzo!?!?! Don't think that one had been pulled out in a while.
mingus333 2011-12-05 17:53:13
Don't get me started on idots that PAY to get into these shows...only to socialize through the entire night! UGH! It's getting so bad in some of the smaller venues in Philly its riddiculous. Main problem is there used to be small clubs like Blue Moon Jazz cafe, zanzibar blue, etc that were small and JUST for music. Now problme is all the small venues are now like a bar or attached to food like upstairs World cafe and people are there to drink and talk. It's embarrassing sometimes...

I remember a Scofield show at the TLA and he actually had to stop in the middle of a ballad and ask the crowd at the bar to tone it down!

sigh...keep the faith! THANKS to all the tapers and uploaders that keep great shows coming to enjoy in peace and quiet! ;-)

And Bill thanks in advance for the WK and Mago sets. Was at the philly show and cant wait to hear!

Peace...
mmwarchives 2011-12-05 18:34:49
mingus333--

I totally agree with you, but I thought Philly on Wed was great & the crowd showed them a lot of love, at least from
my standpoint...don't know if there was a lot of talking up front or not, but we felt very welcomed & loved playing
there to kick off the mini-tour. They want to go back soon!!
newplanet7 2011-12-05 19:23:02
So dug. I'm gonna fire up some more sources for the 2000's.
For us in the shack project when we do the shn~> flac conversion
it should have a new shn ID right?
I didn't see that there was in the db for the ones that you did.
For example the 2002 gig below this torrent was originally shn http://db.etree.org/shn/11867
Since it is a new fileset now it should get a new shn ID correct.

duggy 2011-12-05 21:39:02
Well, the Grateful Dead folks opted to simply attach the ST5 checksum to the existing source entry so I followed their lead, which makes sense to me more after our discussion on the other torrent the other day about us tracking the audio portion of the files, not the metadata per se.

I'm using the ST5 because it can be generated for both SHN and FLAC files -- FFPs contain the same checksum values, but work only with FLAC files so I figure it makes more sense to use the checksum that will cover both. (Again, I think the Deadheads are following this logic as well.) So, ID3 tags can be altered to a person's preference, but the audio will still verify using the ST5 (or FFP). I am not renaming files themselves, just adding tags to FLACs and re-encoding SHNs to FLAC for tagging. I am leaving the filenames as they are (except for those I've changed over the years that were generic d1t01 naming, but these have all been documented in db.etree with checksums added for the new file names.

For SHN > FLAC, I am making an ST5 of the SHN files and the FLACs, and adding those to db.etree -- I wasn't done with that for these recent tagged filesets until a moment ago. If you look at the checksum values in each file type's ST5 you can see that they are identical, aside from the .shn or .flac file extension. This also limits doubling all the sources listed in db.etree. After we all hashed this out in that discussion the other day it made sense to me why the Deadheads are using the ST5 and not generating new source entries. The audio signature on the original SHNs or FLACs matches that of the tagged FLACs.

The MD5 for FLACs basically now indicates that the metadata was changed if the ST5/FFP match fine. But I'm not including this as a checksum in my additions to the existing db.etree sources since my MD5 will most likely not match after you or somebody else changes the tags to your preference, and that seems cool to me. The audio integrity is intact and verified and folks can tag as they wish.

And, removing the tags and creating an MD5 again will match the originally created MD5 -- even after adding/removing tags because the tags are only in the metadata of the file, not the audio itself. I'm happy to have realized this because it means I can tag *any* FLACs I download and not feel like I'm messing with the files! HA! As I said in our conversation the other day, this means matching on seeds will become hard or impossible since the metadata is part of the 100% you are matching on, but that seems like not a big worry to me now.

Bottom line: ID3 tagged sources get an ST5 for the original SHN files and an ST5 for the tagged FLAC files; sources originally already in FLAC just need an ST5 added for tracking.

Does that make sense?

duggy 2011-12-05 21:58:53
And, I'm adjusting the extension at the end of the directory name to .t-flac16 -- the 't' indicating the fileset is tagged. Another tidbit taken from the Deadheads' tagging practice ...

One thing I probably do differently than others, based on tagged FLACs I've grabbed, is I treat each set like an album if it's a multi-set show, so tags for a show might look like this:

... as you can see, I also add guests to the Artist field and I insert Live as the genre. What you can't see in this display is that all the tracks have Medeski Martin & Wood as the Album Artist -- this allows the sort by artist/album in a music player. Here's a breakdown by field of how I usually do it, FWIW:

Album Artist = Medeski Martin & Wood
Artist = Medeski Martin & Wood w/ G. Calvin Weston
Album = 2005-05-12.fob.lsd2.29460 - Set II - Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA
Year = 2005
Genre = Live
Track Title = Drums > Open Improv [@6:48] >
Track # = 01/10

... I've found the constructing the album by basically using the fileset's directory name followed by the Set # and then venue and location to be the best for sorting. But again, these are my preferences ... the biggest help is having filesets tagged with track names and then everything else I massage to what I like ... as I'm sure others do as well ... I just offer this info in case it helps anyone else, and also to understand what I'm doing since if you are reading this you'll most likely be downloading torrents I seed ... HA!

WHy would the already flac sources need an additional st5?
Tagging them doesn't change anything.

You mean in addition to the FFP? They don't *need* the ST5 if they have an FFP, but I created the ST5 for the FLAC sets merely for consistency with the SHN>FLAC tagged shows. The ST5 will be a clue to me in db.etree that the show is circulating with tags. That's why I've also said that the FFP is basically the same thing ... I'm just doing it for tracking the db and for consistency with the SHNs. I can't create FFPs for SHNs, but I can create ST5s for both SHNs and FLACs so it seemed like a good habit to start for tracking.

Gotcha on the st5 with existing filesets.
It's just when I open up a folder and see 5 checksums and two txt files, it seems unnecessary. When you could just flac the shns and include the .ffp and a note saying this is a tagged flac fileset of shn ID......

...in the db.
