caveat:
The 2nd set begins with several seconds of tuning. Unfortunately the
taper had the levels set way too high on his deck. As the band starts
up, the tape is totally over saturated.
Caution for eardrums & speakers is warranted!!!

As we move into the 80's, the number of and quality of sound boards noticeably declines. Most we have are described as dry & sterile and lack the vitality to bring the show alive. My understanding of this situation is that while Betty and most of the board recordings of the 70's were mixed for later playback, the recordings of the early 80's were straight PA mixes. The mix designed to go out to the audience in each venue was not ideal for later playback.
On the other hand, tapers and their equipment had become more sophisticated. For the majority of shows for the next several years, the audience recording trumps the board. While not every audience recording I will put up would be considered excellent, the large majority would be considered good to very good and a fine addition to your collection.
A few of us went through every audience recording available at the Archive and selected what we considered the best sounding audience recording for each and every show. Those are sources that will be seeded during the remainder of this project.

| Hey Germain - this is a situation that works out kind of nice. I'll take a good audience tape any day and when we ran through these sbds, I had planned on eventually doing the same thing on the archives - and that takes a little time. So thanks to you and the few folks who once again, have done all the work for me. There is nothing like hearing the "wave" of excitement as it ripples through the auditorium when the boys drop into "He's Gone" or in the middle of a hot "Scarlet > Fire". You can't hear that on a soundboard!!! Many appreciations. |
