Sobel, the titan of transfers, returns!!!

Thanks for the extra love decoding this weird mid-side, west side situation.
metawhy 2012-03-12 22:50:40
and thanks to the indefatigable Terry Wattage for the original transfer!!
jasonsobel 2012-03-12 22:53:23
all thanks goes to Terry. of all the stuff that he's transferred, he sent me a hard drive with a bunch of stuff - shows that need a minor patch or two from another source, and a few that need m/s decoding (like this one). So, there's more coming...
gainesvillegreen 2012-03-12 22:56:10
Thanks to you both!

Awesome this is the source I have been awaiting I'm pretty sure. After this show I ran into a very nice guy who I started talking with and ended up sending him some blanks for a B&P I have not heard this source in many years. Thank you Mr. E.Burns and your crew whit, (carrion right?) haven't seen you in years hope all is well out there where ever you may be in LA or elsewhere.
Thank you Jason and Terry as well.

this mid-side stuff is hard to wrap my brain around. Do you have to take the one channel that is recorded off to one side and basically double it and then flip one of the doubles so that you have a center channel and both "sides" present in the final recording?

hope that doesn't sound too stupid.

Thanks for doing these up!

metawhy - the key is that the side mic is a figure-8 pattern, and records audio info from both the left and the right. Also very important is the fact that the audio information from the right side is reverse polarity relative to the audio information from the left side. Then when you mix the channels (m+ s) you get the resulting Left channel, and when you mix the mid with the inverse of the side channel (m-s), you get the resulting Right channel. The MSED plugin allows this to be done easily in one step, and allows you to easily adjust the proportion of the mid and side channels. If you mix more of the mid channel, you get more direct sound, but the two L/R channels are closer to mono. If you raise the level of the side channel in the final L/R mix, you get less direct sound, but a wider stereo image.

This looks like a nice source to have. I'm a bit confused by the mid-side analogy.

Has anyone had a chance to compare this to the other circulating sources to see which is "best". (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... so best is different for everyone.)

Microtech Gefell 210 seemed to be the best one to me (at least up to now). It seemed to be the most full sounding of the 3-4 ciruclating sources.

I'll be out of town for most of the next few weeks so I won't get to do a side-side comparison for a while.

Any comments on the sound quality of this vs. other sources would be great.

Thanks for sharing this!
jasonsobel 2012-03-13 15:55:04
My comment wasn't meant to be an analogy, it was meant to be a description of the mid-side stereo technique. There is a lot more detailed information available about mid-side stereo recording out there - just google it and you'll find out a lot more about it.

And in regards to how this source sounds relative to the others, I didn't do a direct comparison, but this one sounds great, and is definitely worth checking out.

next lesson: blumlein shuffling ;)

another way to think about it:

M/S is a coincident pair technique, which means that the mic diaphragms occupy the same point in space, or as close as possible. In fact, when you matrix it, you get the same stereo results as you would running XY. But M/S has advantages. You can adjust the stereo width -- on the fly or in post production -- without physically moving the microphones. Another big advantage for what we do is that the mid microphone is on-axis to the source, so you get the most out of your mic's polar pattern.

In general, when you see an M/S source, you can look at the mid mic being used and get an idea of roughly what to expect. As explained to me:

subcardioid M/S > cardioid XY
cardioid M/S > hypercardioid XY
hypercardioid M/S > short shotgun XY

and so on. roughly speaking.

thanks for getting this out, jason.
metawhy 2012-03-13 19:38:22
thanks for the info guys!

It looks to me like you can get a 3 mic sound out of a two mic system here.

I'll be sure to crank this one up!
tubems 2012-03-13 23:00:58
ok source.

414b/uls->sxm2. card mid into a HB1pro NOT a portaDAT.

we were setup to the right side of the SBD front row.

this was recorded by Me (dan schar), Marc Olsen, Rob Boyle and Witt padgett. correct spelling on names please.

As noted in denver, Witt ran this same rig for both denver shows.

Rob Boyle ran this rig, he owned the mics and ps, at the two hampton shows.

I recorded the next night utah show with this rig but did not run MS for it.

i hope this clears things up. a bit, I'm sorry for the confusion on the denver show.
