|Wow! Ozric Tentacles. I confess that I don't know much of anything about this band other than at the time of my exposure. They were very electronic and for lack of a better term ,"psychedelic.". Here's my story. A group of friends and I were down in Vegas to see the Grateful Dead at Sam Boyd. My buddies who were into the electronics industry did quite well financially. I was along for the ride. We landed sometime Friday , mid day and picked up our rental car. It was a brand new Lincoln Continental. Along with it came a demo tape with maybe two songs on it. One of the songs was named "splooge" or something close to it. The other is any ones guess. So, and this is the truth, we loaded up this huge car with supplies for the show which mostly included beer. When I say loaded, I mean the entire trunk was filled with bags of ice and every beer available. No coolers. It was literally a rolling ice chest. taking our place in the long line of cars heading out to the Silverdome some of us walking some sitting on the back ledge of the trunk. Everyone drinking. There were LV police stationed on the side of the road for what seemed like miles. All the time we were fooling around using squirt guns, critter callin girls, just having a great time. All the while water pouring out of this immense trunk still filled with ice and beer. Remember no coolers just 500 bucks worth of beer and ice. It was good and cold and wet by the time we found our spot in the huge parking lot. Oh yeah, Ozric Tentacles. The lincoln had a standard in dash AC Delco tape deck. Auto reverse was the big feature back in those days. So on a level of ten out of ten this demo tape played, reversed, and played on. Ok skip to Sunday afternoon. Same general scenario, except this time. " the crew" was on it's third day out. Still going strong. Thanks to all the OHM's given out from the Arizona hoodlums. This day was so fun. Lincoln dripping wet with the ice and beer, Some other guys who had been selling balloons all weekend had to bug out so for a mere seventy five bucks we took over their tank, Here is what it looked like. A bunch of weekend warriors with a new car dripping beer out it's trunk , handing out free balloons to who ever would come by, Ozric tentacles "looping" on at full volume continuesly. Needless to say we didn't bother with the Sunday show . We had our own thing going on. By mid show the wildest thunder storm developed and gave us a light show that I will never forget. Well by days end, Ozric still auto reversing at volume ten we had to get back and make our plane flight. Patrick who was the car renter. Skidded into the rental drop off . Water pouring from the trunk and the bunch of us scrambling to figure out our plane arraingments. All of us made the flight with the exception of one fella named Dan who for some reason could not board the plane. Bye Dan! With eyes as wide as Texas, we took our seats amongst many other Dead fans only to be welcomed by the captain. Patrick was reciting prose from "Fear and Loathing" and another fella burst out his harmonika to the handclapping of most everyone on the plane. I say "most everyone because there were a few "civilians" in the mix. They must have been terrified. Even though it was well before 9/11. Oh man , Where have those days gone? I am so happy to have had these experiences in my long infatuation with the GD. Thank you! "And may the four winds blow you safely home" Sorry to take up so much space but I haven't heard a thing of this band OT. I think I will down it to pay my respects. albacore
|Many thanks for this.
@ alfamatty, you really need to buy Erpland which is the best Ozrics album in my opinion and contender for one of the greatest albums of all time. Seriously!
