this is very likely the same source as shnid 5629 (which is just labeled "DAUD"). However, as the recording was made with pre-emphasis, and the transfer for shnid 5629 did not include de-emphasis, this is a significant upgrade, for set 1. Unfortunately the set 2 DAT clone had gone missing, so this new transfer is only for set 1. thanks to Lenny for transferring the DAT and sending it my way!

Thanks for this!

Can the set 2 shns (flacs?) be de-emphasized?
sloth1976 2012-04-27 10:38:15
Thank you

that's a good idea. I can probably do it this weekend.

What is pre-emphasis ?
jasonsobel 2012-04-27 13:44:58
Basically, pre-emphasis was an EQ curve that was applied to the signal immediately prior the original A/D conversion. There were several early DAT decks and A/D converters that utilized pre-emphasis. The pre-emphasis EQ that was applied to the signal raises the high frequencies. The reason behind pre-emphasis is that the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) on early A/D converters was not as good in the high frequencies. By applying pre-emphasis before A/D, it was a way to maintain a higher S/N ratio throughout the frequency spectrum. Of course, the pre-emphasis EQ is only half the story. The other half of the implementation is the de-emphasis EQ circuits on the playback side of things. the redbook CD specification allows for a "pre-emphasis" flag to be set in the data stream, and all normal CD players should be able to handle de-emphasis on the fly. The problem is that it was rarely used, and mnay modern CD players don't have a buil-in de-emphasis circuit. On top of that, most CD burning programs don't allow you to set the pre-emphasis flag, and most people don't even know what it is. So, a better way to handle the pre-emphasis issue on playbackis to de-emphasize these recordings. Essentially applying the de-emphasis EQ curve to the audio, which is the equal and opposite EQ curve relaitve to the original pre-emphasis EQ. Once the de-emphasis EQ has been applied, it brings the signal back to what it originally was, and how it was meant to be heard. If you listen to a recording that was made with pre-emphasis and never de-emphasized, the highs sound very harsh and overbearing - it's not pleasant to listen to (and of course, it was never intended to be heard like that).

Some thoughts, Jason...

1) Remove the pre-emph on the #5629 and do a comp... They should sound very much the same, if same source...

2) Please remove pre-emph from the entirety of #5629 and Re-Seed, please!

3) Curious if this is same Taper/Source as the few other AKG461 > Custom Pre > DAP20 Sources that circulate from this time period... http://db.etree.org/shn/112423

Thanks,

Terry

Terry - I don't think that this was taped by Dave F. or Tom McMinn. A lot of tapers at the time had AKG 464's, and a lot of tapers used the DA-P20 deck.
LAStubbe 2012-04-27 14:24:28
Pretty sure it was a TO area taper, we just couldnt confirm.
