Inspired by the mixes that show up from time to time (a bunch of jams stitched together to make one continuous jam), the Phish Distilled project offers a mostly instrumental, whole-show Phish experience.
I took the original shns/flacs and edited them in audacity, producing a mostly instrumental version of the show, so as to concentrate and bring out the improvisational core of the music, while preserving transitions between songs. So, the files in this torrent are labelled "phd" instead of "ph" because they are edited/mixed, but they are originally from the source listed in the description.
I've tried to get to the heart of the matter. Enjoy! |

| seeing this post reminded me that i downloaded your first "phish distilled." i finally got around to giving it a listen. while i am entertained by the effort and concept, the execution and the resulting listen is far from enjoyable, and i hope that this series of yours is not widely consumed and spread around the community because it would pain me to be somewhere and hear this stuff being played instead of the original unedited show. |

oh, and one more thing - I am truly sorry if you feel that cutting out lyrical sections, utterly destroying the flow of the songs and the show, and creating this sort of spliced and jumpy musical experience is, in your words, "getting to the heart of the matter". I suggest you settle into a phish show next time you're at one and try to re-evaluate your notion of "heart of the matter"...
end rant. be well all. |

I am curious to see how this version of Star Spangled Banner sounds with no lyrics...

Terry, it's just crowd noise... (kidding)
toddmmarcus, you like the idea, but not the execution? Specific criticism is always welcome.
I hope this project doesn't come off as disrespectful. I love phish a lot, ever since my first tape. After my first show... We're lucky to have such art in the world! |

as i usually say/think, "if you're not into it, move along". different strokes for different folks, etc. i doubt if this were playing in public, say, in the lots pre-show or at a party, people are going to mind hearing instrumental Phish no matter how far it is from original form.
perhaps etree isn't the best place for something like this and it's better suited for a blog or linked to in a thread in some forum, but I still commend the originality and effort, personal artistic expression, etc. it's just always nice to see passion for this band's music, in whatever form it may come in. |

I think everybody probably likes phish as a whole, but i think it's neat to hear a show a different way, i've listened to a ton of phish, hearing it done different one or two, or however many times is fine by me.
Keep up the good work, there's a lot of time to listen to Phish, might as well try something different once and awhile. |

| Even though on the first torrent I commented on how I thought it was better suited for a blog, the first torrent got more completes than a lot of reseeded sources. If people want to grab them, I say keep at it. I prefer a full show but thanks for the efforts. Clearly people are enjoying this project. Thanks for adding to the community. |

telo, simply put, i find the listening experience to be too jumpy. if there was a way to "filter" out the vocals while leaving each note in place, I would probably enjoy listening to it more...i just got the "whoa, it paused, whoa it fast forwarded sense" and that wasn't working for me.
stay well. |

| Yeah, this would be better suited as a V0 fileset linked from a blog. |

My sentiments exactly.....Not knocking the messenger or the music but the flow did not suit me. |

Haven't listened to either of these yet, but I'm somewhat intrigued by the concept. The negative comments appear to indicate a "cut & jump" editing style. You might wanna try cross-fading instead.
Do 3db exponential fades out & in for, say, 2 - 5 seconds (equal time periods), then mix over the faded regions. Critical thing here would be to stay IN RHYTHM over the fades - this takes some talent, patience & experience. It is (or should be) a labor of love, though. ;-) |
