Johnny Rawls was born on the Mississippi Delta and steeped in its steamy blues
and soul traditions from the moment he could hold a guitar and unleash a heartsick
howl. He has played alongside the titans of genre, and is now widely regarded
as one himself. This week Rawls plays three Vermont dates: Thursday, May 3,
at the Black Door in Montpelier; Saturday, May 5, at the Stone Church in
Bellows Falls; and Sunday, May 6, at Club Metronome in Burlington. Local
soul and blues monster, and Rawls’ good friend, Dave Keller opens each show.
Dave Keller is the 2012 winner of the Best Self-Produced CD Award from the Blues Foundation,
at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. About.com recently declared “Dave Keller's
gonna be huge!”, and it's starting to seem that way. A first-class singer, guitarist, and songwriter,
Keller has earned the respect of the torchbearers of blues and soul music.
Legendary guitarist Ronnie Earl featured Keller’s singing and songwriting on his 2010 CD Living
In The Light, which received a coveted BMA nomination for Contemporary Blues Album
of the Year. Mighty Sam McClain, one of the deepest of the classic soul singers, has mentored
Keller for years. And Mississippi soul blues master Johnny Rawls calls Keller his protégé,
frequently spotlighting him as part of his touring band.
