This was a pretty crazy (and long) night at Irving Plaza featuring The Cabin Down Below Band which has seemingly become the NYC house-band for various cover-fests featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones over the past few years. The motif is that they call in all of their friends to sing a song or 2, and it becomes sort of an all-star event.
This time around it was a 2 night run at Irving Plaza (to benefit Amnesty International) in celebration of Bob Dylan's 71st birthday. Boz Skaggs and Donald Fagan (from Steely Dan) played for the entire show (though Donald was not necessarily audible in the mix at all times), and the cast of vocalists ranged from the Dawes brothers, Jesse Malin, Regina Spektor, Corey Chisel, Ryan Miller (from Guster), Jody Porter (Fountains Of Wayne), Adam Green (Moldy Peaches) to folks from The Mooney Suzuki, Alberta Cross, Robbers On High Street, Pop Etc., Five O'Clock Heroes, and Delta Spirit, plus the drummer from The Strokes (for one song). Also a few of the Saturday Night Live folks sang a bit too.
They managed to cover but a sliver of the Dylan catalog, hitting many of the high points -- mostly well known stuff ("Tangled Up In Blue", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Subterranian Homesick Blues", "Just Like A Woman", "Maggie's Farm") played with equal zeal as some very deep cuts ("Odds And Ends", "Isis",'Sara", "The Man In Me" -- featured so prominently in The Big Lebowski, "Where Are You Tonight", "Standing In The Doorway", "Love Minus Zero / No Limit"), sticking mostly very close to the original arrangements.
Any Dylan-o-phile (as myself) should be proud of the tribute paid to Mr. Zimmerman on this night. Hipsters familiar with folks in the lineup but not particularly knowledgeable about Dylan should check out how their favorites pay tribute to their master. :) |
