My review:
Govt Mule's Saturday night set may have been the most eagerly-awaited set of the weekend by most of the folks in attendance due to the previously announced special set to pay tribute to recently-departed local resident Levon Helm, which was to feature as many of the members of his band as they could gather. But the pre-Levon Tribute set was no slouch -- highlights being the Zeppelinesque "Mother Earth" seguing right into a cover of one of Frank Zappa's most accessible tunes -- "Trouble Every Day" (with its unforgettable opening line "Well I'm about to get sick from watching my TV.." and chorus "There's no way to delay the trouble comin' every day"), the first performance of a brand new tune called "World Boss", and appropriately, a brief "Mountain Jam" tossed in the middle of "Gameface". Tying it up with a pair of covers -- the Beatles' "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", and the Rolling Stones' "Bitch" (with a few guests sitting in), the band exited while the stage was prepped for a tremendous amount of extra players for the 2nd set.
The following Levon tribute set definitely lived up to the high expectations I already had -- featuring most of the core members of Levon's most recent band (minus, notably, Stephen Bernstein and Erik Lawrence in the horn section -- but featuring "Blue Lou" Marini) -- most importantly including Jim Weider (who was in some latter-day incarnations of The Band) and recent bandleader Larry Campbell also on guitar (and vocals) and his wife Theresa Williams (on vocals) -- who were both key members of Phil Lesh & Friends and Bob Dylan's band in the past. Warren made mention of Amy Helm, Levon's daughter who'd also been in the band for years, who was supposed to make it, but for some reason had to cancel at the last minute. Brian Mitchell, also a key member of the band for years (who took over many of Levon's vocal parts in recent times when he was unable to sing) shared keyboard duties with Danny Louis. It was very emotional (but celebratory!) for everyone onstage and in the audience, and Warren did a great job on vocals for a number of tunes...and did a superb job at directing traffic with so many musicians onstage.
There was no true setbreak after the Levon tribute set...just a few minutes for everyone to catch their emotional breath and shuffle off of the stage. Warren, genius that he is, knew that it would be VERY hard to follow the Levon tribute set with any sort of traditional Mule set, so he opted for a setlist featuring long jazzier jams ("Birth Of The Mule" and "Sco-Mule" were both long exploratory versions), reprising a bit of The Band's "It Makes No Difference" (in place of usual "When Doves Cry" intro) before segueing into "Beautifully Broken", and closing out the Saturday night main stage with a powerful "I'm A Ram". |
