Thanks to Jon Pasternak for hooking me up with a tapers' ticket for this night
Note there were loud local clappers near the tapers' section, so I spent some time "de-clapping" this recording. I scrubbed claps from S1T2(10 claps), S1T3(4), S1T5(25), S1T7(1 balloon pop), S1T9(44 claps + EQ to tamp down 2 yells), S1T10(2 balloon pops, 13 claps), S1T11(25), S1T12(3), S1T13(4), S1T14(6 claps, 2 balloon pops), S1T15(9), S1T16(6), S1T17(14 claps, EQ to reduce 1 whistle), S1T18(18 claps, EQ to reduce 1 yell), S1T19(63), S1T20(8), S2T6(4), S2T7(2), S2T11(1), S2T12(4), S2T14(12), S2T16(12), S2T17(1 balloon pop)

Continuing the theme of the previous night and knocking the crowd out with rarities right out of the gate -- on this evening kicking things off with the rarity "Alumni Blues" (with the typical "Letter To Jimmy Page" sandwiched in the middle) that I personally hadn't seen since the Beacon 1994 run (and at that show they only played HALF of the song!...). Upping the ante, the band next dipped into the depths of their Halloween covers catalog and pulled out The Velvet Underground's "Head Held High" (from the album Loaded) that they hadn't played since 10/31/98), and yet again by pulling out the mostly-shelved (only played once since the hiatus) instrumental "The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday" (they even stumped me on that one -- I'd forgotten how this tune went) which serves as the intro and outro to the Jewish high holiday prayer "Avenu Malkenu". WOW! Knock me over with a feather and at that point it really didn't matter what else they played, I was already thoroughly roped in by what the band was doing! At this point the overplayed "Kill Devil Falls" was OK, though mostly forgettable given the context of the song placement in the set -- the best I could say about it was that at least it wasn't one of the 12+ minute versions they've done in the past. :) Following that up with "Bittersweet Motel" (a little ditty welcome only I could cross off of my list of tunes I've never seen Phish perform live in my stats), the band took things into 2nd set-type territory with a really nice run through "Moma Dance" > "Gumbo" > "David Bowie". Also VERY welcome was a spectacular version of Mike Gordon's song "Susskind Hotel" (my first time seeing Phish perform it though I've seen Mikes solo band play it a bunch) before bringing out Fish to the front/center to continue the tour-long running joke about Fish tucking his dress into his matching underwear. OK, it's a little silly, but anything to motivate the band to bring out Fishman to sing some songs is a good enough excuse for me. The Fishman features were one of the things I really lamented the band putting by the wayside after the late 90s, so I'm psyched they're now back in rotation! And on this night, he pulled out the old Prince chestnut of "Purple Rain" including vacuum solo. AWESOME!
While at the show, I felt like the 2nd set was a bit of a letdown after all of the craziness and rarities of the 1st set.....but while I was listening to my recording, I had to reassess my initial reaction. This is a really spectacular 2nd set where the setlist doesn't really begin to cover the performances. Of course their take on Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae Woman" lead by Mike's funky bass playing was a huge highlight to get everyone dancing right out of the gate (as it always is), but "Tweezer" (which I'm completely burned out on and would be happy to never hear again) holds its own with some unique powerful jams in this case, and the "Twist" > "Taste" plays out more nicely in actuality than it reads on paper. Really there are nothing but highlights from this point on, everything that follows is exceptionally well played and high energy (and segued into/out of) -- even "Show Of Life" which is not a favorite new song. More Velvet Undergroud ("Rock & Roll") and some Stones ("Shine A Light") were very well-placed covers, and "Julius" was really nice to hear.
