SPAC 7/6, night 1:
Heading upstate to Saratoga for the next little run of shows -- to the historic and generally "blessed" venue that people seem to love, the band chose to open this show in a more traditional manner with "Runaway Jim"...the next couple of tunes -- "Ocelot" and "Heavy Things" while well-played are pretty forgettable, but I could hear things picking up slightly for "Get Back On The Train" before reaching their full-stride with "Funky Bitch" and "Tube" (with an impromptu cover of the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" tucked in the middle), after which they decided to bring Fishman a/k/a "Friar Tuck" to continue the running "tucking" gag from the tour. As soon as he came onstage carrying cymbals, I knew the tune he was going to play was a cover of Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rosie", since the customized cymbals (with "Bah Bah" written in duck tape letters) are a key part of any performance of "Rosie". Of course Fishman was having a grand old time whooping it up, and the crowd loved it! At that point they could have been close to wrapping up the set, but this set continued to give and give with a now-very-rare "Paul & Silas", "Horn", "Corrina" (Taj Mahal cover) and a set closing take on a cover of Traffic's "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone" (which has only been played by the band a handful of times since the late 1980s). Another super strong first set!
...and another 2nd set that I didn't do a great job in judging at the show since (again) I felt a little let down after the heights of 1st set. After listening back, this is another really really strong set, though I was a touch disappointed in all of the repeated songs in this show that I'd just heard a couple of days previous at Jones Beach -- "Chalkdust", "Sand", and "Antelope" were all repeats from just 2 shows previous. Now after listening back, I can say that this is also an amazing set no matter how you slice it -- a nice jam from "Chalkdust" -> "Carini", and another great jam from "Carini ->"Sand". The "Roses Are Free" is exceptionally well done, and the funk workout of "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" is always welcome. Really the "meat" of this set is the jam between "Sally" and an awesome extended version of "Ghost". After the awesome "Antelope" workout at Jones I was interested to see if the band could top it (and they didn't) but bringing out Tom Marshall and The Dude Of life is one way to this version of the tune notable.

| These recordings from SPAC sound leaps and bounds better than the Jones Beach recordings. Mostly because the tapers' seectiin was a LOT closer to the stage/PA at SPAC than at Jones Beach. Give 'em a listen, they are crisp and clear. Not even a hint of wind on this night (though it was REALLY hot and humid out -- I don't break a sweat easily and I'd broken into a full sweat long before the music even started!) |

So where are the FOB pulls?
I saw 1 stand on SPAC3 around 15 rows from the stage. |

| These are good enough to not need FOB. So wild how different the venue sounds compared to my '04 recordings. Gary really has done an amazing job. |
