Thanks so much for this gem of a gem!! Some notes from db.etree:
03/10/2003 Brian I just took a good long listen, first off it is definitely smokin'. Second I am pretty sure that the organist is none other than Howard Wales. It is pretty interesting to hear him on Dark Star. I wonder if this is one of the first times Garcia and him played together.
11/02/2004 Andy Someone plays a flute in the background for at least a couple minutes of this show (and maybe more) beginning at 10:30 into Dark Star. Any idea who it is?
pbuzby 2012-01-01 15:26:01
Show is with Howard Wales on organ. Probably a precursor to the gigs in 70 and 71 (Side Trips, Hooteroll) Jerry played with Wales, I believe rarely with other Dead members involved.
Any comments?? Agree or disagree about Howard Wales on organ & any idea of who the flute player is?? |

Also, some speculation regarding the date:
cryptical17 2011-12-31 09:13:50
I've always seen this list in Deadbase. Isn't this show probably from 1968 when Weir and Pigpen were on hiatus?
germain 2011-12-31 09:40:47
Best I can tell, the date of this show was taken off of Bear's cassette master. I guess it's possible he labeled the year incorrectly, but there is nothing I've seen to support that is the case.
Any thoughts?? |

| it's gotta be from the period where Weir and Pig were fired...So, it's Garcia, Lesh, Wales, Hart, Kreutzmann, and Andy Someone on flute?? |

Howard Wales on organ is what the illustrated trip says...it also says this is the first "eleven jam"& the last "it's a sin" an eternal recurrence there,it appears- Friedrich Nietzsche would dig this show,eh?
-thank you so much mr.miller for all you do! we love you & wish you the best at this holiday season-giving people like you are what makes the world go 'round! |

| I don't know if I'm going to help here or just muddy the waters even more. My recollection, for what this is worth, is a handbill I saw stapled to a utility pole tha listed the Dead at Playland (aka Family Dog at the Great Highway) for three nigths, the 28th-30th. That's what got me out there. I was there on the 29th because I remember the Lovelight well and the 30th because of the Eleven. I had thought I was there all three nights but I don't recall Howard Wales at all. This makes me wonder about the date and the venue which is listed here as jg69-08-28. If I recall, the source for this is a cassette from Bear but the mix doesn't sound like anything he had a hand in, i.e. the vocals and flute so distant. Also, the crowd sounds pretty sparse. Granted, if the date is correct, this was a Thursday night but it seems more club-like in dynamics than Playland. I wonder if the venue isn't the Matrix. And perhaps a Tuesday night jam (8/26/69?). |

<<So, it's Garcia, Lesh, Wales, Hart, Kreutzmann, and Andy Someone on flute??>>
It would not be 'Andy Someone'...that is just how that note got copied from db.etree.org. The note is left from 'Andy" & the information
begins: 'Someone plays flute...' Just to clarify. We will probably never know, but I'm guessing tyhat it's not Ian Anderson--HA!! |

"-thank you so much mr.miller for all you do! we love you & wish you the best at this holiday season-" from above, jerome70.
I heartily second these sentiments. Thank you! |
