Some of the best pulls don't have a preamp.
Can you run all microphones without a preamp? Sometimes I feel like the preamp adds an artificiality to the sound.

|Great show, thanks for sharing. to answer metawhy, most (all?) mics need a preamp to boost the low level output of the mic to a level for the DAT or whatever media is recording. so if you're setting levels, as you are on a DAP1 or a D7 or whatever the DAT deck of the day was, you're using the deck's built-in preamp. external preamps generally do a better job at boosting the signal (lower noise, less distortion, etc). but yes, at a loud concert you can usually get a good tape w/o a preamp. i ran nak's directly into a D7 for years, and got some great tapes. it's during recordings with quiet sources that having a good preamp makes the biggest difference...but a good external pre-amp probably can't ever hurt....i coudn't get my NAK rig in this night, got there a bit too late...so patched and enjoyed what may be my all-time fave attended phish show from up close on fish's side! gotta get my old NAK masters from the previous night, year, and following years up on here at some point. they don't circulate. cheers
|Meta - to clarify (maybe correct - though others have much more knowledge):
Mics that have their own phantom/power source can be run straight into a DAT such as a D7 which does not have phantom power. A DAP1 had a pre-amp that could run phantom power to mics. Though I'm not doing research right now I recall the B18 being an external source.
Most higher end rigs ran external devices for each piece of the chain:
Mics > ext. pre-amp (i.e. sonosax, v2, Oade) > ext. a/d converter (i.e. ad1000, ad2k, sbm1) > recording device (i.e. dat deck).
|Pre-amps are necessary for any mic other than Dynamic Mics, ie SM57s, Senn441s. They provide phantom power at the proper voltage the mic requires. The sound the listener hears isn't characterized by whether the taper used a pre-amp.

I have always felt like the pre amp adds some flavor specific to the pre amp. Mics > deck get it done just fine, but in my experience adding a nice pre is like throwing some cream cheese on a bagel.
Meta, as said here, the dap1 was able to provide power to the mics so a preamp was not needed for power in this situation, but as you've seen over the years, many tapers have used a pre amp with the dap1 for that extra flavor.

|Just thought I'd chime in regarding the external pre-amp vs no external pre-amp. Even when no external pre-amp is used, ALL recordings made with condenser microphones NEED to use a pre-amp to boost the signal, because the signal coming directly out of the mics is far too quiet to get a good recording. So it's not a question of whether or not to use a pre-amp, but it's a question of whether to use an external pre-amp vs the one built into the recording deck. But in both cases, the signal is going through a pre-amp. In most cases, external pre-amps are higher quality, which is why many tapers use external pre-amps.
