Anybody have any anecdotes to account for abbreviated 2nd set?

| I love the 79 Springfield show...surely 95 is the worst year for the Dead. But then again I'm no expert on 95 because two glasses of wine and a 95 recording and tears start to fall...so I turn it off... |

| This show was officially "Upstate Jam", and had Greg Kihn and the Good Rats opening for the Grateful Dead. Greg Kihn was forgettable, and Deadheads didn't appreciate the bar band rock of the Good Rats, especially when as part of their act, they began throwing rubber rats into the crowd. While this was a proud possession of an attendee at any other Good Rats show, the Deadheads promptly threw the rats back at the Rats. Good entertainment. I remember their lead guitarist had a wireless guitar (pretty new thing back then) and played the lead for their big song "Injun Joe" from high up in the stands, right next to some friends of mine. When the Grateful Dead came on, it was already late in the afternoon. The story is that the show ended quickly because of a sundown curfew. I'd check this show out; it has some really good moments, especially the second set. The Scarlet/Fire is heavy on the rhythm, especially when reggae vibe of Fire begins. Jerry has some real fine moments here. The post drum sequence feels a little rushed, but urgent, so it has a real nice energy. Wharf Rat is wonderful here, with some great work by Jerry. It was my first show, and I had no idea what to expect. It was a great initiation to the band and scene. It was so damn hot that day, I decided to go shirtless. Days later, my entire back was peeling from the sunburn. Fortunately, I was starting my freshman year at Oswego St. and having the time of my life. |
