Featroller comment: the best yet of the mid-90s SBD's recently excavated from the Archives. Kicks off with the
great Spider's Blues – my long-time leader for Best Song That Never Gets Played. Fred's raunchy-sounding trumpet
at the end rings deep in the fun part of your soul. Another early highlight is Old Folks Boogie, which in
those years featured Paul's preacher intro ("You ain't old when your hair turns gray, you ain't old when it falls
awayÂ…"). The rest of the setlist is heavy on the then-new Ain't Had Enough Fun album, including the funky All
That You Can Stand, with Kenny getting a bass solo. Lots of energy throughout – Paul mentions that they had been
in Northampton before and appreciated the rowdy crowd. And all in crispy clear SBD sound. Thanks to Featseeker
for the original upload at dimeadozen.org, and to our indefatigable Archivist for his ongoing efforts.

*SBD:MR>C1>DAT>Edit (see below)>CD

*On the SBD:MR their were numerous pops in the left channel & some in the
right channel. These errors sound like equipment problems on the stage,
but I cannot be certain of its origin.

*These errors & lineage from DAT were corrected (almost perfectly) as
follows:

*GoodBear DAT @ 48kHZ > Sony DAT deck PCM-R300 > coaxial s/pdif > pentium II
350 mHz via Turtle Beach "Fiji" soundcard > CoolEdit > convert to 44.1kHz >
edit - zoom in real close on the errors & remove (BOTH channels w/o any
noticeable music loss for most of the errors) & lowered AUD volume levels
in CoolEdit > Smart & Friendly CDR SCSI drive > CD

*AUD patches were added in Morning Dew onward until the 1st 4 minutes of
Sugar Magnolia, prior to me receiving my DAT. The patches were seamless,
but the volume was a touch too high, so I lowered it just SLIGHTLY during
the AUD portions of Morning Dew only... Teddy Notes 10/1/2006: AUD lineage
from 6/2000 fix not remembered, but one can assume is from the AUD in
circulation at that time.
Taper notes:
I'm a pretty big Indigo Girls fan, having been introduced to them as a live act by one of my Grateful Dead touring buddies, way back in 1991, when, yes I was familiar with "Closer To Fine" and "Blood And Fire", but not how awesome they are as a live act. My friend Mike Stentz convinced me to attend my first Indigo Girls show back at the State Theater in New Brunswick, NJ and I loved it! Since then I've had a bunch of wonderful opportunities to see (and record) them, and have even posted a recording I made of them from Highline Ballroom on 4/15/2009. But I've been itching to put out something from the Indigo Girls in my archival BARN series, and when I went to my Indigo Girls DAT recordings, this was the one really stuck out, so I pulled it out for BARN134.

Why did I choose this show for the first Indigo Girls recording to be featured in my archive series? Well, first off despite the fact that the Girls have been supportive of their taping community for years, this is the first show I saw of them after they released an actual taping policy stating that mic stands and full rigs were allowed, so I was able to tape with my full rig at this show -- so, sonically it absolutely brilliant. Also, while I've seen them in various configurations over the years, I contend that the best configuration for the Indigo Girls is just the duo of Amy and Emily -- no need for any extra instrumentation (which they seem to bring out on tour more often than not). Also I generally love Central Park Summerstage as a venue for shows.

This was a really interesting night because it was a show that was rescheduled from 8/14/2003 -- the night there was a huge blackout in NYC. Even though the Girls played a short set during the blackout (apparently powered by gas generators), I did not make my way up there -- I'd have had to walk a very long distance (2 miles), carrying all of my gear up to Central Park from where I was working in midtown east -- and I wasn't even sure if they were going to play.

Fast forward 2 months to October to this rescheduled gig, as the last Summerstage concert of the season. The Girls were done with their tour at this point -- this show was a one-off, and apparently they'd already finished recording their subsequent album "All That We Let In" in the interim. Itching to be playing the new songs from, the band broke out many of them despite their unfamiliarity to the crowd. Sometimes dropping a ton of new songs on a crowd isn't the best idea setlist-wise (as people will start to lose interest), but this crowd was totally adoring and enjoyed the songs -- old and new alike. Frankly it wasn't hard, with such great new material like "Perfect World", "Dairy Queen", "Free In You" and "Fill It Up Again" -- all of which are very strong and hold up well against their more classic material. Being a NYC crowd, there were tons of audience requests -- and you can hear Amy and Emily responding to them between songs. Of course there were the classics -- "Get Out The Map", "Power Of Two", "Virginia Woolf", "Closer To Fine", and "Galileo"; deeper cuts like the beautiful "Wood Song", "Mystery", and especially "I Don't Wanna Know" (from their first album -- Strange Fire, played due to the presence of Michelle Malone as an opening act, as she co-wrote it); and recent high watermarks like "Become You". For the encore they bring out fellow Georgia native Kevin Kinney (now known as Kevn Kinney, having inexplicably dropped an "i" from his first name) for a nice Dylan cover, and manage to weave a nice "Bitterroot" into one of their epic (but lesser-known) "Chickenman".

If I recall, it was a chilly early October night and neglected to bring a jacket to keep me warm on this chilly night, and managed to meet fellow NYC-Heads email list membere who I'd never met before (but had seen online over the years) -- Stephanie Guida, a fellow Rutgers alum who had urged me to release this years ago! I guess it's better late than never. :)

Due to some flaws inherent in the physical media, this particular DAT tape would not play the first song completely -- despite the fact that I'd left the traditional 1st minute of the recording blank. And it has not been damaged by the ravages of time because it would play even the day after I recorded it.....I can actually see some creases in the tape when I examined it visually, so there's not going to be any deck that will play it cleanly, ever.

Enjoy!
Added note from Eric:
There are 2 level adjustments in this recording. One during tweezer(a few
mins in), and i believe there's one in the opening tune of the first set. I
smoothed out one of them, but the other I could not do anything.
